You can afford to be at war with one only if you are allied to the other, otherwise Engand's precarious independence could be lost early on, before she can consolidate. That's the main geo-strategic reason you CAN'T just concentrate on unifying your islands at the beginning. The scenario (especially in MP) is supposed to give England that dilemma.

As I say though, France will leave you alone at the beginning. However, Catholic Ireland will remain Catholic. We won't be in conflict there as long as you keep English influence limited to Dublin and the Pale. On the other hand, Auld Alliance or not, you have a free hand in Scotland as far as France is concerned....
