Colonization II Project

As I mentioned in another thread last month, Colonization is just about the only thing for which I use DOS mode on my PC.

That, and the occasional (increasingly rare) game of Transport Tycoon.

(!) A man after my own heart...

Becka: another Transport Tycoon fan? I used to play Railroad Tycoon Deluxe as well. Even wore out my floppies (that's not as naughty as it sounds) and had Microprose replace them after a few years. I think I still have the discs, but never installed them on my most recent computer.

Love those European railroad scenarios where you can have Brunel, Napoleon III, and Lenin all building at the same time.

Hi, everybody,

this is my ever first message in my ever first forum (just to tell you how important it is for me). I have been a fan of Sid Meier games since Pirates ! I loved Civ, even more Colonization and Civ II is still the game I play the most.

I wanted to tell you that I totaly agree that graphics and sounds don´t matter. I still love Colonization graphics. Being too sharp decrease the imagination part.

The only thing I would ask for a colonization II, would be the multi-player ability. After playing civII in network, thing wasn´t the same anymore !

If someone (the best would be Sid himself) could make a multiplayer Colonization, it would be my dream !!

Yes. A big fan. :D But TTD never worked for me. We have a thread about it somewhere. :king:

Though nothing has been decided yet, mp will most likely be included in our game. The good thing about ("pure") mp is that it doesn't need an AI, except for the Indians. And programming a decent AI is gonna be a hard thing to do.

Anways feel free to stop by our forum and post. We don't care if you're new as long as you've got some good ideas. :)

BTW we really need some active C++ coders!

ahh... colonize
My only problems with the game are a lack of playability after independance, not being able to produce factories, lack of multiplayer and a crazy monarch.
The taxes over wich the 13 colonies rebeled were under 1percent and primarily affected rich merchants.
Americas revolution was unjustified, seeing as that, the crown had gone into dedt to take quebec which america profitied from greatly, the 13 colonies being extremely liberally run and the quebec act being wholly justified.
America has been eating up it's own propaganda for centuries and like any nation where nationalistic and for the most part corparate controlled, unfree and self proponenating press has become a danger to the rest of the world.
May this stray black sheep learn to treat it's neihbors as equals and end it's hipocracies.:D

I love Col1, there is only one problem to it: it is kinda one way solution to winning and what is more: there is a point when you HAVE to stop expansion because otherwise your son of liberty % will never go up high enough. I HATE stop expansion!!!!

:king:

The gameplay is based on nice ideas. But it is not as genial extracted as Sid Meier did with Civilization.

The thing I like about Colonization is the explorer feeling and the huge trade aspect. Of course Col had quite a lot of bugs (concerning taxes and other things) and it was in some ways a little too simple IMO (combat or the custom house for example) but we plan to change those aspects.

BTW concerning the low %SoL stopping expansion: In Col2 not all Europeans on the docks will be Loyals, SoLs can be found there, too. This is not only better for gameplay but also historically accurate. (Of course it is not likely to see a SoL from the royal College.)

Unfortunately we're currently far away from a beta. Our 2 (new) programmers don't really have much time that they can devote to the project... I hope this will change soon.

If anyone here knows C++ and perhaps even SDL, feel free to help us.

wow, colonisation II, that kicks ass, ive always wanted to see a sequal to colonise, or at the very least a update.

why doesnt sid make a sequel!?! that wud kick ass!

It would be nice to have Sid Meier's Universal, including ALL of the aspects of Colonization, Civilization III, and Pirates! Allowing you make incredible scenarios and multiple game play variables.

I love Colonization too, but have to share in the "fix this" complaints:

1. The damn thing where troops would park outside your colony to form a wall was both unrealistic and REALLY annoying.

2. I found I tended to like the early game better because exploration and formation of companies was far more interesting than mindless expansion. If anything, I'd rather see a game that made it worthwhile to have a compact few colonies than 500,000 of them.

3. The whole independence thing did seem a little odd; not terrible, but worth adjusting.

4. Factions would be a good idea; better to pick a "company" - g.g. company of adventurers, massachusetts bay company - that could find itself in competition with other companies from your nation... Most of the interesting combat and politics in the colonial period was in fact internal, e.g. the Cuban governor sending Narvaez to try to kill Cortez so that the Cuban crew would have the rights to any finds in Mexico, etc.

Every project member but one shares this view, so if it reappears in our game then only as an option (aggressive AI).

We'll increase the mapsize but also the nations (and plan to change a lot more) it is hard to tell how this affects gameplay, only playtesting will tell us (and we are far away from it).

So what would you adjust, we're open for good ideas. :)

For our first cversion we'll only use nations but we'll increase their number. The idea of companies has been mentioned before... maybe in a later version.
