I am very confused as to why combat functions like this. Why does the horse archer attack so many times and the samurai only once? Why don't they alternate attacking? Is the first strike code bugged, and the horsearcher receives 2 first strikes instead? I think that the combat is severely messed up! Someone please tell me why exactly these sorts of situations happen.

There is a known bug in the odds calculator, you don't really have 99.1% of winning.

But even if the odds are correct, you should expect this to happen 1 out of 100 battles.

This should be in one of the strategy or general forums, not the GOTM forum.

I can't explain all of the details above, but here's the basic idea. Each round, either the attacker scores a hit, or the defender scores a hit. (Except for "first strikes", when only the side with the first strikes has the chance to hit.) There is no alternation. In your example above, the Horse Archer happened to win rounds 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9; the Samurai won round 7.

See "Combat Explained" at http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=137615 for much more information on how combat works.

Moderator Action: Please do NOT start discussions about the current game outside of the spoilers. A small amount of patience is all it requires to wait for the spoiler to open. Even if your initial question seems 'clean' it can provoke follow up that isn't. It's much easier to just follow the simple rules of the GOTM forum.

Note that even this small question has exposed one of the AI civs!
