We read something about being Allies with another human player in MPG.
It concerned determining boarders, how is this accomplished and more to
our point is there E-Mail or some form of communication allowed between
players in MPG while the game is being played ? This would seem to either
add a very different aspect to the MPG game that we had not thought
about earlier , or make the game much more complicated.

There are several forms of communication between players in MGE & TOT online. You can use the chat feature, which is usually enabled at the start of the game or you can use the diplomacy screen if your civs are in "contact". The last works better for swaping & stuff if somebody has established an embassy & both of the players are at least "receptive". It is all real time.. no mail, messages..etc.

It is a good question whether the Chat with Kings ought to be enabled from the start.. but it is usually a invaluable tool for the host to get everybody settled in & get the game off to a good smooth start.

Dogberry,

Thanks for the reply, we find this is most interesting.

So for example if we were playing Russians on a world map & met someone
playing the Chinese, assuming we started in Moscow & the Chinese in Bejing,
theroerically could we ally and agree to recognize the borders
between our two civs as it appears on the world map ?
Do you agree on which land is whose by the map coordinates ?

Using the Royal "We" already or do you just carry a frog in your pocket ? Usually a prominent landmark such as a river, mountains, a desert, etc. is used. Sometimes a little creative ambiguity creeps in too. If it is done in good faith by both parties, it is not too much of a problem.. but it helps if there are some distinctive & natural things to work with.

Of course you can agree on borders.Yes you can say something like "draw a line from xx,xx to xx,xx and thats the border"
Actually haggling this out can be little more complicated but that is part of the fun.And there may be others that don't recognize your "borders"

You can chat 1 to 1 in kings chat on other's turns or icq etc to iron out details.

I like chat on from start. It adds to the game. There is a handy dandy mute feature when neccessary

If there is a chatty cathy I put the window in the background.

I prefer a rough border (one that limits movement to 50% - NO roads!) and then line up diplomats one row behind the lines, that way if anyone crosses the border, I will know and can react accordingly.

I almost always play on some form of real world map and it's easy to claim territories and name borders. Discussing territory with real countries names makes things much easier.....and....it's helped my geography considerably

If you never play on world maps, i suggest you try it atleast once....makes for an interesting game if nothing else....

Too much chat gets on my nerves, and I've thought of disabling chat when hosting.
Then it dawned on me.
Why?
I can sometimes pick up conversation not intended for my ears; plus with all the messaging services such as ICQ, players can just talk outside game.

My opinion is, ideally there would be no conversation of any kind until you meet another Civ.

I see your point about World map, Drake.
I prefer exploring an unknown, unfamiliar world.

Dogberry,

In answer to your
" Using the Royal "We" already or do you just carry a frog in your pocket ? "

We are a family of three who all post on the internet as a single enity " moof ".

Think " Borg " only much nicer. We all Civ but only two are truely Fanatics. The other of our collective is willing to wait till we discover new Tech and gift it to them.

P.S. On The Frog in your pocket thing, we really had too laugh about that one.
Have you heard the Joke about the Engineer who finds a talking frog ?

Dogberry,

An engineer was crossing a road one day when a frog called out, to him and said,
"If you kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess".
He bent over, picked up the frog and put it in his pocket.
The frog spoke up again and said,
"If you kiss me and turn me back into a beautiful princess,
I will stay with you for one week."
The engineer took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and returned it to the pocket.
The frog then cried out,
"If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I'll stay with you and do ANYTHING you want."
Again the engineer took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket.
Finally, the frog asked,
"What is the matter? I've told you I'm a beautiful princess,
that I'll stay with you for a week and do anything you want.
Why won't you kiss me?"
The engineer said, "Look I'm an engineer. I don't have time for a girlfriend.
But a talking frog? Now THAT ís cool!"

that was hilarious! also thanks for the info on chat and such will come in very handy

i tend to use ICq for secret chat as it cant be discovered as in putting a spy next to opponents capital. But also good to save the ICQ chat log to use agaisnt those two timing backstabbers later !!!!!

Two things ...

1) You should not be using outside means of communication for matters that have directly to do with the play of the game.. or you should at least try to limit it to technical things & just day-to-day chatter. In the strictest sense.. this is cheating.

2) If you carry grudges beyond the game.. & it can happen to anyone, you are going way too far & need to calm down a little. If someone carries out a effective backstab on me..it is my fault not theirs.

Dog: I agree to some extent with ur post... but don't confuse anger with legitimate intelligence...

I remember a game with Wooz (a/k/a Darklord) a while back where we signed a "peace treaty" then just a few turns later he attacked me hard...

I wasn't happy, of course, but I accepted it as "part of the game."

However, in any future games with him, I never again signed any form of peace treaty with him because I don't trust him. That doesn't mean i won't play with him -- just that I know to expect relentless war.
