TBH, I think that to some extent you're right! XD I guess I'll start a VP game sooner or later in Prince, as my last one was in King and I was crushed by the AI lol.

Yes higher difficulty means AI have better techs and more production.
That means you are more likely to be considered weak and at risk of getting hammered.

My current game also has its own amount of tensions. I have friendship with two civs (Russia and Polynesia), with me (Babylon) and Russia being in a defensive war against Poland (runaway). But, at the same time, Sweden on the other side of the continent is at war with both Russia and Polynesia, and he's winning that war against both...

Meanwhile, in the other continent, Zulus reduced Indonesia to a single backward city and is at war with Spain. And both Zulu and Spain are hostile to me...

I think maybe it's just the archipelago map, with few border conflicts, there will be less aggression.

VP is much more balanced than vanilla. Unlike vanilla, yields other than science and food matter. Science is still good, but the other yields are balanced to be as powerful.
