Rant, Rave, ask questions, etc.

I just got the game and the PC upgrade to play CoH, and it ROCKS!

I have a few questions.

1. What should I build first in Skirmish mode? (For both Axis and allies, Annihilation mode)

2. How do I beat Hill 192 level?

3. Any tips on playing?

CoH is great - really a top notch game in every way, especially the sound effects are among the best you'll ever hear from a game, IMHO.

1. I've played quite a bit online, and my basic start is to build 2-3 engineers/pioneers, get one to build a Barracks/Whermacht quarters and send the other two out to capture resource points. As Allies, I'll then build for 4-6 rifle squads, or if I'm Axis, 3-4 Volks squads and 1-2 MG42s.

As Allies, you can also build a Weapons Support Centre first, then a Barracks a bit later. This can be good on urban maps where it's more difficult for riflemen to flank MGs, but generally I'd stick with the barracks if your new to the game.

2. Sorry, I can't remember that mission specifically.

3. Always use cover, and always retreat if your squad is in danger of being wiped out - it's much cheaper to re-inforce squads than to build new ones.

One tip regarding flamethrowers - they actually do more damage to units in cover, so if your being attacked by engineers/pioneers with flamethrowers, or a flame tank, get your guys out into the open! They will take less damage.

Too many tips and bits

man the 105 and lay down artillary as its free but has a timer
use AT guns, snipers at choke points
build defences includng wire and Tank traps
I have a tendancy to build MG posts instead of MG teams though in 1.7 the range is reduced. you do get a ton of free infantry at the start so get them onto the Mgs and Mortars.
You can build on the hill so easy to reinforce right at the front line

or if your stuck on taking the hill mission.
I simply massed my tanks and simply rushed onto the hill with engineers in tow.

If your axis use those early MGs to your advantage, being able to produce MGs rite of th bat is a major major advantage in teh very beggining, you can capture points and cut of sections early by putting them in buildings, just make sure you have bikes handy to take care of the snipers when they come around.

Also, surround capture points with barbed wire so they cant be nabbed early game, its quite usefull, also becuase of the time it takes to cut them you can mayby kill the enemy before they can steal it.

In case you cant tell, I only play axis, I have way more tips but this is a game where the early game is crucial there are very few comebacks and if you can avoid dividing the map in two and making the gamedrag on for an hours then by all means do it.

Good tips there

Allies use your engineers aggressively axies bikes go down very quickly under a hail of engineer fire.
I generally skip infantry for snipers and get a flamer for the engineer it requires you to group them though.
Push Push Push. get in and cut of the enemy chain of territory.
You can Rush tanks very quickly but be careful there no match for AT guns
Airbourne is very strong. (even with 1.7 patches)
Dont forget you can reinforce from a Halftrack
Very limited artillary options so dont turtle

Also if your going to go volks against early rifleman then send in your volks rite against them, and unuprgraded volks squad always beats and unupgraded rifleman squad when theyre in "close" range, rifleman always win at medium and at long its fifty fifty.

Actually, it's the other way around. Un-upgraded Volks will usually beat Riflemen at long range, whereas Rifles will usually win at close range. The reverse is true if you get the MP40 upgrade for the Volks, which turns them into miniature Rambos at close range, but absolutely useless at long range, or against targets in buildings.

BTW, if your interested in watching some CoH replays, then I highly recomment this site. Every week (more or less) they post an audio show and a video replay with a commentary, both of which are very entertaining and pretty informative: http://talesof.wordpress.com/

Get some low level infantry out, cap everything you can, dont fight big battles over points at first. Find the good defensive positions and hunker down in them if you wanna turtle. If you can, close off all but one chokepoint, and focus only on that one ( Example: Lyon, you blow all but the middle bridge, and then make your stand there while you build up ). Otherwise, you need to just be constantly producing units. The game is also very micro intensive, and if you are good at it, you'll only need a couple rifleman squads to completely own the AI. MP, well, thats another beast. You'll learn that as you play some online games.

And dont bother with worldbuilder. Its a hard task creating a map. For an amateur, 2 hours of work can yield...nothing.

Have you made maps in 3d? With many many 3d objects and splines? And done territory splitting?
And did you patch your game to the latest version? If not, id suggest that first. Otherwise, scour the Relic forums

Then I dunno. The world builder is basically like running another instance of CoH, so maybe you're trying to run it while you're doing stuff that normally wouldnt be done when you're playing CoH?

What exactly does it say when you start it up? Does it give some error message or does it just go to busy cursor then nothing?

Try a dedicated CoH forum, maybe it's a common problem? Other than that, all I can think of is to try re-installing the game.
