Computer freezes up but mouse still moves

Don't forget to reseat your graphics card and all your power supply connectors (including drive power).

While you're wiping your CMOS, if your BIOS chips are socketed, try firming them down as they can lift from their sockets with thermal cycling. Only takes a second and can't hurt.

Are you running with the case side off during this process? Mightn't hurt to try.

Well XP is up and running on my comp, unpatched and everything. So far no freezes. I think aimee was right about it being a driver issue. Probably had something to do with the motherboard drivers. Perhaps I might not have installed them at all because of this.

Congratulations. I agree as you suspect that the motherboard drivers are probably best left with the windows default. Exceptions are that on board ethernet and sound are often not working out of the box.

Yeah the sound drivers need to be installed but the ethernet worked right out. I'll continue to install things carefully until I get comfortable. But for now, assume everything went to plan! Thanks for the help, guys! :D

Good news, everyone! It was the motherboard drivers! I guess I forgot that tidbit of info when I first installed it. Now when I go to the update website, it doesn't crash and now I'm downloading SP3. Thanks again for the help!
