Mixcoaltl stood on the same hillside overlooking Tula as he had those many years before. The years flew by his mind as he looked back on the early days. As he shifted back to the present he was again reminded that his time was soon at an end and a sucessor would come soon. He had overscene the coming of his people to this new land and their prospering in it. But the work of the priest-king was never done. They had discovered several warring villages to the south but so far had managed to avoid being involved. How much longer this could last he did not know. Prehaps it was time to fortify the outer village? As he looked at the high noon sun, he realized it was time for his meeting with apec the tool maker, who's experiments with " melting" rocks had begat some results he claimed.
Mixcoaltl: greetings apec, I'm here to see for myself your gains for the tribe
Apec: Greeting my lord, I hope you well be pleased
Mixcoaltl: Then by all means lets begin!
Apec: yes honored lord, as I told you last moon, while building my fire pit for working tools, I had lined it with several unusal rocks I hasd found I this new lands. At the end of the night I noticed the yellow one had actually "melted" much like animal lard, then got hard again. Curious I gathered several of these yellow rocks and applied heat from fire to them in differant amounts and volumes. I found I could melt a great amount. Even harden it is shapable by pounding and bending. I have made a great many small items from it.
Mixcoaltl: So this rock could replace our current obsidian weapons and make us invincible!
Apec: ahemmmm, no my lord, while useful, it is not better than obsidian for weapons.
Mixcoaltl: Oh, that is it than?
Apec: Oh no my lord, while teating the yellow rock I have named gold, I have found another rock, a redish one " melts"Too.
Mixcoaltl: would did you do, go around and test every colored rock in the land ? < ha, ha, ha >
Apec: Well yes lord, after finding the gold I took the sacred peyote and walked withe the Gods and was shown the path. I tested several rocks till I found the redish one which melted. I have named it copper, it is harder than gold but still shapable>
Mixcoaltl: Great!!! so this is the new weapon we will use to conquror the world.
Apec Ahmmm, no lord obsidian is still better.
Mixcoaltl: Why have you wasted my time than < anger >
Apec: Acourse not my lord, I have some more, when I accidently mixed some of the copper with a whitish/gray melted rock, it hardened into a super hard rock of great strength. The problem is I can make it but am unable to bend or shape very well at this time, for now it is beyond me.
Mixcoaltl: This new rock, it will make better weapons?
Apec: Oh yes lord, once I've mastered it.
Mixcoaltl: Then from this day on you have no other job but this, your appprentice will take over your duties. I will assign 2 others to assist you. These first stones, the gold and copper, is there any use for them ?
Apec: I made this my lord.
Apec pulls out a golden mask with colored shiny stones for eyes, and so polished it reflected the very sun.
Mixcoaltl: By the very Gods, it is beautifull, A gift worthy of the priest-king to wear. You have others?
Apec: yes, nose rings, ear rings, hair pins, cups, plates--you name it
Mixcoaltl: you made all this things already? why
Apec: The strangers, to trade with the strangers.
Yes, the strangers would pay well for such items--what did they have to offer the tribe in trade? He would send parties to each of the warring villages to talk trade and learn from each of the others till we know as much as we can, village names, leaders, # of warriors, weapons, all we can.
