I have tried congo 5 times now.

I get four cities, get catholicism in each of them, they grow okay.

5 10 6 4 population

But I never get past the 15% representation in the apostolic palace. Many games, vikings are collapsed during reformation so when they come back they are catholicism. Very few nations seem to ever convert.

This last game I got lucky and Germany and england converted, and protestantism becames 7%. but other games sometimes protestant stays at 1 or 2 %

But, there is still so many catholic countries in this last game that I am still only around 10% of representation.

How do you get this 15%? And also I got unlucky this last game and there are hardly any natives, so at 1630 AD I still only have gotten 1 slave.

I started to cheat on this last playthrough to see how many catholic countries must exist for it to be possible with 4 congo cities.

I gave sweden and france protestant missionaries, (france founded protestantism but didnt convert). It caused sweden to collapse before conversion, which doesnt matter because they are out of the apostolic palace then. and that caused me to get to 12%. Two turns from the deadline, I saw it is impossible for me to succeed because there is still too many catholic countries.

I took away catholicism from paris which was the protestant holy site, and so got france to convert. That pushed me to 15.4%

So in the end, if there is 5 catholic countires besides yourself, you can win. But if there is 6 or more catholic catholic countires, I don't see how to complete this without... IDK how many cities and population it will take.

Unless someone can point to a better way to play Congo to ensure the population and number of cities to get 15% in most playthroughs, maybe it should be reduced to 12 or 10% to complete first UHV. Otherwise people are just rolling dice to see if they win, no matter choices they make.

at 1700 I have enough kills to have 2 great generals but I still only got 1 slave from natives LOL

Even if you play Congo perfectly, the first two UHV goals are ultimately based on luck. You need to win two jackpots, I ranted about it before. I have no idea if the 3rd goal is supposed possible, but even in 1.15 it involved heavy cheese (gifting a city to a tech leader and then stealing tech).https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/a-congo-game.550468/page-3#post-15199093

Right now, I'm failing to win an easy Inca game, so I know how you feel.

This is my first time starting as Congo (1.16), and apparently luck can be on your side. I am starting with immediate European contact. Hopefully it'll be helpful.

I have won the Congo game recently after like 4 attempts. The biggest problem was to get the religion to spread, then it was just building enough settlers and missionaries and make them move around avoiding pesky Portugal conquerors. For the last 2-3 slaves I had to scour the whole continent, but pombos had nothing more to do anyway.
The research goal was easier than I expected, especially when I built all available science and commerce buildings in all cities. I tried to build espionage points vs Portugal but I did not need them.

Wow good job! I have always thought Congo was impossible and not bothered.
