Hey, I've never done this, but I've been interested in doing one. I've seen you around in a couple other forums :)... okay if I join?

Oh crap never mind... I see your other one

Wait, I'm so confused! I know you Conquests disc isn't working so are you gonna do this one or not??

First roll suckah!

Anyone else? :) I'll start once I get one more person.

lurker's comment: Sorry I'm a newb, but what's the traits for Abe in PTW? He visibly isn't expansionnist here and the war academy has been updated for C3C :mischief:

lurker's comment: Abe should still be industrious and expansionist. Industrious is just stronger in PTW (2x non-ind workers, as opposed to 1.5x in C3C). Dunno if there are any other differences. But expansionist is probably the most useful at Monarch level. Biggest difference in favorability of goodie hut outcomes between non-exp and exp at that level, and you still have lots of good stuff available (no settlers or free units or techs at deity, for example, even if you're exp).

CD and krew should do well with this one.

And I wouldn't think of calling BEF a newb. ;)

Good luck.

Strategy: Settle on the spot maybe? Hills, water, and game, pretty good looking. :groucho:

Edit: If that hut pops barbs (which I dont think it can) I will kill everyone. Yes, everyone.

lurker's comment: Looks like a good place to settle if you want. Hill is defendable (although it's not likely you'll ever have to defend your capital from attack -- way too much would have to have gone seriously wrong before then) and you have flood plains for food and game forests for food and production right within easy reach. On the other hand, you may want to consider stepping 1NW to be able to work the cow right away rather than on culture expansion in 10 turns.

Send the worker to that square, settle and let your culture borders pop the hut. You won't get barbs if you don't have a military unit built yet. Pop it with the culture borders rather than with your scout, since you want the possibility of getting a settler from the hut, and that won't happen if you have a settler around who hasn't founded a city yet or if you have a settler currently in production. You also won't get the tech that you're currently researching.

As far as techs to research goes, you don't have to be as driven to look for trade value on Monarch as you do on the higher levels, as you can easily outresearch the AI, but it's a good habit to get into. You're Industrious and Expansionist, so you start with Masonry and Pottery. Both have good trade value, but neither allows you to research a second level tech right away. (By comparison, if you start with Ceremonial Burial, you can go right for Mysticism.) The AI likes to research all the techs on one level before going on to the next, so if you research in a straight line instead (CB to Myst to Poly, etc.) you can often be the first to research a tech and be able to trade it around at a premium.

The goal is to be able to trade what you have for something you don't have at a profit, either having them give you one or even two techs for your one, or at least throwing gold in as part of the deal. Thus it also makes a lot of sense to not trade with the first civ you meet. Yes, do not trade with them until you have met at least one other civ. Even if they have something you want. Get in the habit of trading not only for what you don't have, but for what at least one other civ doesn't have either. That way you can end up with many more techs than what you started with. (For example, say you start with Pottery. Trade that to India for Ceremonial Burial plus gold, trade CB to Mongols for Warrior Code, then trade Warrior Code and CB to Persia for Iron Working. You have thus parlayed one tech into three. Simplified example, but you get the idea.)

On the other hand, at Monarch you can still out-research the AI pretty well, and you should have lots of cities up and running soon to fuel research for you. So you may want to think about what techs fit in well with your goals. Avoid the ones that the AI is likely to research or trade for ahead of you anyway. Heading for Republic is nice, or also Horseback Riding for early horsemen. Map Making may not take long to get to either, and that will allow you to make even more contacts, always a priority.

Anyway, I hope you don't mind all this completely unsolicited advice. Have a great game!

You know I don't know. I think we should settle on the spot. 10 turns will make no diference. We aren't gonna get a settler out in ten turns.

I read neither of your posts before playing... oopsie. I started right away so here it is...

Alright... here we go! My first ever turn on an SG!

Turn 1 - 4000 BC: Codytown is founded! Oh, Lord, if that thing pops barbs I'm going to die...

Clipboard01.jpg

Nope, no barbs! 25 gold!

Warrior in 4 turns, worker goes NW to start on a road.

Turn 2 - 3950 BC: I start research on Alphabet and move science up to 70%... worker starts building road.

Turn 3 - 3900 BC: A Zulu warrior with infinite movement points comes and destroys Codytown... oopsie.

Actually, nothing happened.

Turn 4 - 3850 BC: Nothing... warrior next turn!

Turn 5 - 3800 BC: Warrior! sending him southwest, methinks. Another warrior in 4 turns. Worker is done with road and will now irrigate...

Turn 6 - 3750 BC: Warrior explores a bit, finds ivory.

Turn 7 - 3700 BC: nothing.

Turn 8 - 3650 BC: nothing.

Turn 9 - 3600 BC: another warrior is produced... explore north. Worker is done.

Turn 10 - 3550 BC: warriors explore a bit, worker builds road

And I'm done! Didn't screw up TOO badly did I?

And here is the save!
