Conquering cities

Hi,

I just started playing this game and when I conquer a city, the city is completely destroyed. How do you capture a city without destroying it?

It probably happened because the city only had one population unit at the time. If you conquer a city with more than one population unit, it should give you a prompt to either raze the city or install a new governor.
