Conquests Release Date

I preordered it on Amazon on Friday or Saturday using the free shipping. *Sigh* it looks like they won't be able to ship it until the 14th according to what they sent me... unless they simply send out the international date to avoid confusion. Oh well, at least I got the bonus CD free.

Hey, thanks Atari, for letting us know the game will arrive in stores on Tuesday, Nov. 4. What good does that do us if we can't actually buy the game from the stores until the 5th?! Why the hell do I care if it physically arrives at the store if I can't buy it yet?!! What kind of marketing nonsense is that?

It starts arriving in stores today. Not all stores might get it on the 4th, as with any game. I guess it depends on their shipment schedules. I've noticed some stores like Eletronics Boutique gets theirs a day or so later, where some get it a day or two early (on rare occasions).

I went to Best Buy on my lunch break today and they said the release date had been pushed back to Nov 6th. I just hope its out before Christmas at this rate.

I went to Best Buy and EB on my lunch.
Best Buy is expecting it on Friday.
EB says it is shipping today and will be in tomorrow.
They gave me the free CD "Best of the Net" today with my pre-order.

Here's what Amazon emailed in reponse to my inquiry on my September 14 preoder -

"Thank you for writing to us at Amazon.com.

Sometimes, unexpected fluctuations in supply can add time to our
original availability estimate. We have learned that "Civilization
III: Conquests Expansion Pack" is now back-ordered, and our supplier
has not been able to let us know exactly when they expect to have
more in stock. I apologize that you were not notified sooner of this
change in availability."

Or in other words - they don't have it and they ain't saying when!

Hi Colonel,
My apologies if you're frustrated. I can only say to call ahead. As I've already discovered through the preorder program, some stores handle distribution differently than others. However, today is the day that we have launched the product and is the first day that we can expect the product to be in stores. And we did do some fancy manufacturing footwork to avoid delaying the official launch another week... some stores may not have had the ability to make the necessary distribution adjustments.

Best,
Jeff Foley

Ironically, my Civ-hating wife was actually going to buy it for me today, since she went down to the mall. She must have known it wouldn't be there when she said she'd get it. :D

Would it have been better to say "shipped to stores" instead of "arrives in stores"? I've been to Wally-world and they had the spot on the shelf marked and ready. They just have to check the order into store inventory before they can go to the back and get them for customers. Same thing at Target.

Yes, I buy software at these stores.

Oh yeah...when I went to Best Buy today to pick up a copy (which they have not received yet) they said they are only getting 15 in the odrer on Thursday. FIFTEEN.....it si becasue of this ordering genius that I had to wait 4 weeks to get PTW last year. Every order they got in was 8 or 5. If you know you had this problem last time wouldn't you just order properly this time....apparently not.

Yeah, same exact thing here. The marked shelf was like teasing me too. I had gone all over town searching like Best Buy, Circut City, GameSpot before I found out that today was the ship date, not release date.

are you saying that these two stores have the item in the stockroom but just haven't "inventoried" it yet? if so, then no, it would not have been "better" to say "shipped to stores" instead of "arrives in stores"... because apparently it HAS already arrived, at least at those two stores... when they get around to entering them into inventory and stocking the shelves has nothing to do with Atari

I checked with several local stores (I'm in the Twin Cities, MN, USA) and got the following responses:

Target (11/5, possibly 11/4 evening delivery), GameStop (11/5 afternoon), CompUSA (11/5 or later), Best Buy (11/6), Circuit City (whats Civ?!).

Hope that helps.

PS~ Most stores said they thought the manufacturer delayed the shipment. Also, for those of you outside the Twin Cities area - we tend to get games the morning of it's release date. This is the first time I have had to wait past noon for a game - maybe there was some kind of delay that even Jeff_ATARI doesn't know about...

Many stores only receive 3-5 copies of most games, and then just order to replenish as necessary. Often what you see on the shelf is what they have. A few years ago stores would order massive amounts of inventory and keep most of it back in the storeroom, but in general the trend lately has been to order enough to get by and save space.

It's only by preordering that the store knows to order additional copies. (Hmmm. Perhaps I should have mentioned that in my "preorder the game!" post. Next time, perhaps.)

Best,

I didn't expect Target to get it tonight, but I have one right on my way home from work, so that would be cool.

I'm in Des Moines, a couple hours south of Minneapolis, so if you get it up there there's a good chance we'll get it here, I'd think.

Considering that boxes are now 1/3 the size of what they were a year ago, I wouldn't think it would be much of an issue.

I tend to see stores start with half a dozen copies in the first week, then if it sells well they dedicate a "center isle" spot with dozens of copies (probably because they add it into their sunday paper ads or something).

Well they were the only stores that had shelves and price tags out already. They said software usually arrives in the lunch hour shipments from UPS. There's a chance it could arrive in the evening shipment, but most likely it won't come out until tomorrow.
