Can someone give me the best example of an efficient and effective tech path to persue? I still get hang up during some games. Could it be made in the form of a list? There, I will print it out and go by it. I'm sure to get positive results in my next game.

Rule #1: Turn up your science rate as high as you can afford and keep it there except in special circumstances.

Rule #2: Go for Monarchy as soon as possible for which you'll need Ceremonial Burial, Alphabet and Code of Laws. Without this you can't even get basic land utilisation right.

That will do for now!

I like to go for Republic right away which means researching Alphabet, Writing, Code of Laws, Literacy, Republic. Sometimes an off path tech is needed on the way to Republic and I often choose the Wheel so I can kill off any AI civ on my continent with Chariots.

After switching to Republic, research will be faster. Next I go for Ceremonial Burial and Mysticism so I can build Temples in my cities and grow to size 4 (on Emperor). Next is Trade + Religion for Bach. Next is Democracy.

Meanwhile, cities will get a Marketplace so that they can grow and stay happy with some luxuries. My next goal is Railroad.

I avoid Pottery, Horseback Riding, Monarchy, Feudalism and Chivalry since they don't lead to any modern techs.

Here is a list for you:

1 Alphabet
2 Writing
3 Code of Laws
4 Literacy
5 The Wheel
6 Republic
7 Ceremonial Burial
8 Mysticism
9 Bronze Working
10 Currency
11 Trade
12 Philosophy
13 Religion
14 Democracy
15 Map Making
16 Masonry
17 Construction
18 Mathematics
19 Astronomy
20 Navigation
21 Iron Working
22 Bridge Building
23 Engineering
24 Physics
25 Steam Engine
26 Railroad

Maybe I forgot something.

Sometimes you cannot research the next tech in line because some techs are left out of the tech choice list according to some algorithm. Just skip that tech for the moment and research another one first if that happens.

Thank you for the list of techs. As for the government advice, I believe I have it down as I head from Despotism to Republic and then onto Democracy. My trade is spent as follows:

30% Tax
70% Science
0% Luxuries

Any other % suggestions?

I suggest 100% science when you want to research something and 100% taxes when you want to build stuff.

At first you need to discover the Republic as fast as possible so it is good to have 100% science. When you have Mysticism and need Temples in your size 2 cities so they can grow to size 3, 100% taxes lets you rush build the Temples and complete them faster. To celebrate WLTPD and grow to 4, a high luxuries rate is needed. After that you want to research some stuff again so science should be set to 100% or 90% so you can pay maintenance for the Temples.

See there is no one answer to this. Here's another take...

cliff has Masonry as #16. I would research it much earlier. Why? Because then you can build the Pyramids. And owning the Pyramids makes a HUGE difference in Civ1 and completely skews the game in your favour.

I have heard that Pyramids should be very good but I have never been able to get any particular benefit from them in any of my games. Why? Because Democracy is not that difficult to research. When I am able to build enough Caravans for the Pyramids I am also about to research Democracy or I have it already.

What I mostly do is build pyramids as fast as possible and switch to... communism! So I would certainly not go to Monarchy, Monarchy in Civ 1 is worse than Despotism IMHO. As for techs to get fast: Railroad, Literacy, Gunpowder, Religion.

Pyramids make a hard game easier and an average game easy. Very useful for fast world domination.

I like the quote from Brian Reynolds in the Designer Notes of the Civ2 manual. He's talking about the choices they made when designing Civ2 and comparing it to Civ1...
...Only in two cases, the SETI Program and the Pyramids, did we find it necessary to "scale back" Wonder effects. Throughout the CivII design, we have tried to play down rules that tended to have the effect of "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer." SETI was a clear example of this, since the first player to discover Computers is pretty much by definition ahead in the technology race; to double his technology output as a reward only served to cement his lead. We lowered SETI's effect and added Research Labs as a possible catchup mechanism for other players. Similarly, we liked the Pyramid's effect but found that introducing it so early skewed the game wildly, so we moved it forward (Statue of Liberty) and gave the Pyramids a hardly disappointing new power...

I usually have 4/5/1 tax/science/lux.

And first thing I research is Bronze Working and then Wheel, Alphabet, Masonry, Writing, Mathematics.

? 4/5/1 That would nevr work for me! I use o/10/0 usually, till Fusion Power, then i use 9/0/1

I usually use in the beginning 100% science and when I get rioters, I build temples and I take 90% science and 10% tax.
after I discover Chivalry(the last tech I discover) I take 10% science, 50% tax and 40% luxeries.

You discover Feudalism,Horseback Riding,Chivalry? I know they suck, and I usually steal them with Diplomats. When I get rioters I either send a cheap military unit or I put one laborer of work and make him an Elvis.
