Hi, do most pple here use a corruption mod or tweaked the settings in the editor ?

I would think most do not, but there are a few mods that remove it. I just ignore it and turn corrupt towns into farms. Scientist are not affected by corruption and neither are taxmen.

I like the corruption scheme. In Civ2 there wasn't any and all towns were built up. I hated it, all the towns were copies of each other and when your empire got big it really got tiresome.

Civ3 vanilla was really bad about this (went back to Civ2 at the time). PTW and C3C gave more tools to battle corruption and make it more manageable.
But I prefer Civ4's method of maintenance costs allowing cities to produce while leashing REX the wonder dog.

i just did an experiment with a saved game. i always play domination games so my empires get big.

i found communism is awesome compared to monarchy and republic.

i also made a lot more cash from the reduced corruption.

I changed the setting in the editor. I raised the optimal cities number so you can have more cities before the corruption balloon. So cities in the outer rim of your empire are not ridiculously hobbled like in the stock game. Corruption should have increased gradually as you got further from the capital, not increased gradually, then immediately went off the charts once the magic number of cities was reached. That set-up was a very stupid idea on the part of the developers. I also modded the governments extensively changing which corruption settings some of them used.

That is interesting. Would you mind posting more info about what you did and found?

results - played as Babylon - 50% science - also had the Adam Smith's Trading Wonder

Communism - income-3415, net gain +840
corruption -446, -67 to unit cost

Republic - income 4277, net gain +237, -1638 to corruption, -556 for unit costs

Monarchy - income 2936, net gain +442, -1032 to corruption, -81 for unit costs

Production for cities farthest away from capital.
Communism - about 20% loss of shields
Republic - about 75% loss with courthouses
Monarchy - about 60% loss with courthouses

I found that many more cities in the Republic government lost a lot of production. Communism also gave me the same 4 turn science techs with more income than republic.

once your cities grow past 12 in Communism you can even lower corruption more with police which results in more income and shields even more.

my favorite governments
1. communism
2. monarchy
3. republic - i dont even research this one anymore

How much was lost on war weariness?
I've had empires that covered the globe, but still republic made more money than communism, even after the Secret HQ.
Production goes up further away, but Communism rarely makes more money.

no idea why im making way more in communism, i think it is because of my unit support of 6 per city.

that is why im making more.

republic gave me 800 more income. i just like have a huge army so commy works best for me.

Could you post a save of that game? I sure would like to examine it.

Your republic corruption rate was 38%.
Your monarchy corruption rate was 35%.
Your communism corruuption rate was 14%.

(Based on the numbers in post #8.)

Thanks for posting that info up. It's been a long time since I played a stock game, but I used the communist government and I recall the corruption was manageable. Usually I had a large empire by then, on a large map, with lots of units.

Do you know if you went over the optimal number of cities for the map size that game was played on?

This is what I found in the editor for the optimal number of cities per map size:

tiny=14
small=17
standard=20
large=28
huge=36

This is the Civ3 Complete Conquests editor which I think is the same as the original Conquests expansion.

I have never tried Communism - I just like my Repub too much. I am playing a series of game with only religious Civs so it might be time to test out chi-commery :rotfl:

I've never even researched Com... maybe it is time to expand.

I have a small map and I own about 50% of the tiles - can't remember my city count though.

Musn't get into a rut eh :D

i had way more than 28.

I used to have more than 150 cities on huge maps which I think is all I played. In the post above I meant the largest map, I forgot it was called huge. I would build the FP and the 3rd capital building along with courthouses, and police stations eventually. That kept the corruption down enough for the cities to be usable.

Communist has worked fairly well with large armies and the larger maps, but I've never tried it in smaller games. How it turns out for you would be interesting to hear about. With the religious trait, at least you wont get a long anarchy.
