COTM 09 Results and Congratulations

Congats to everyone and many many :thanx: to Renata.

A question about Jason score. The best date for Conguest is two hundred years later (750AD) than for Domination (550AD). I got domination in the same year with Bradleyfeanor conquest with only 100 more Firaxis points. How come that I have higher Jason score? His victory is only 40 years away from the best date, while mine is 240 years away .
I did not know that Firaxis score is so valuable.

Your Firaxis difference of 100 was a large percentage of base score. Subtract your Firaxis bonus of 5040 to get base scores:

Solen=850, Bradley=750. Difference = 13%

Your relative dates were 20 turns apart = about 5% of turns remaining, which reduced the base score difference, but wasn't enough to cancel it out.

Sorry the starting locations map was a little late arriving on the QSC results page. It's there now.

Very interesting. In case anyone is interested, I'm the one that settled SW of the start. Didn't seem to hurt my early game too much as I finished 10th on the QSC list. I wonder how I would have done settling in place like most of the rest of you did.

I'd like to know who the one person was to settle on the west coast with the first settler!!!

That was me, Tubby. I ended up abandoning this one for GotM40, particularly after I didn't get the GLib or Lighthouse.

I noticed that you didn't post a concluded save for this one and was wondering what happened.

Just out of curiosity why did you move so far? Were expecting the map gods to give you a bonus grassland??

I kept looking for a better start, and after not finding it, decided to go for the quick SoZ. Just a terrible start all around. Also, the RNG was unkind to my curraghs--no contacts in the QSC.

Noticed you had the 2nd highest QSC, found that amazing. :wow:

Yeah I was surprised too. I didn't think that I did especially well. Looks like lief's extra tech pushed him over the edge by 2 points. I guess all of that training in SG's helps some.

Good job winners

By the way how can you get into these tournament like games? I'd probably lose but i still want a try at it!

Welcome to GOTM, Hoolio. :)

Just download the save from this page and start playing. Look around the site to find out the rules and the way to enter your final save.

Feel free to PM one of us if you still have questions after reading through all the info.

Enjoy!

Basically to get a high score you need to get to the domination limit (obviously without going over) ASAP and then work on your victory condition.

I did not realize this, so to get the best score even when going for the space ship or even diplomatic it's best to gain as much territory as possible? Interesting.

Congratiolations to the winners, and especially to the "son of Hendrik" for surprising everybody with the gold, Jove on his first award (why did they ship Cape canaveral to Colorado?), and ofcourse Sockaka for smashing my 20K date with a massive 25 turns.

Well done :goodjob:

Conquest is tough. Not only in COTM but in GOTM as well.
Out of 5 attempts I have won it once. I'm not good at early military
rushes, usually I try to maximize Firaxis score. While somebody goes
straight to conquest and tooks the award. :crazyeye:

Arrrr, yay! My first award ever, out of so many attempts. I'm happy, in fact, me buzz beats aboot the brae (bet ya thought we didn't have those in Colorado). Thanks Offa and Redbad, thanks to all the other folks who usually win faster and didn't go space this time. Thanks Renata, for the scenario in which I finally took an award!

Hey SirPleb, when is the last time you went for a diplo victory and Didn't take the fastest finish? Nice one! :goodjob:

...showed the merits of taking risks, triggering a domination win in 310 AD, using suicide ship chaining to ...

...waiting for astronomy / navigation and invading with knights.

.. somewhat circumspect...

hmmm.... how do u know these and make these conclusions? I can of course tell by looking at the save games I can SURMISE how it was done, but I find no log records for these games. Are the logs somewhere else? Isn't a log a requirement? Or is this another case of my not seeing the nose on my face.. [PS: I know about the FORUM THREADS, but I am looking for the logs that go with the file that is downloaded.. I know I dl'd some that DID have logs attached, but it seems to be the exception.]

Also does anyone know how to get the "video replay" that plays at the end of a game? I can find no way to get this to happen for games I download, even though I get em for my own games. As you can tell I am interested in learning how people find the best paths.

I also tried the "suicide path" to send waves of ships to find other lands, but early on I was 100% failing. According to the civilopedia, the ship should not be able to cross until nav and/or magnet, but somewhere around 200AD I was just able to cross MOST of the time. Anyone know the math for this and how to estimate your chances? As I understand it if you have the LIGHTHOUSE it IMPROVES your chances, but it still is a risk.

I notice none of the early winners built ANY wonders... just GROW & UNITS..

Anyone have hints/tricks for SUPERCHARGING the generation of EARLY settlers for RAPID GROWTH seeding?

I know this is a LOT OF QUESTIONS, but I'm not too shy about showing my ignorance.. lol  I DO TRY BEFORE I ASK.. haha.. in case you wondered.. :)

Thx for any helpful hints..

Logs are only a requirement for QSCs. The forum spoiler threads are the place to look for details of people's games. Most of the good players share most of their secrets in the spoilers.

The best way to replay the completed games is to grab Dianthus' great CRpSuite of utilities. It provides a lot of useful information about the games, and allows you to replay them. It can also replay pairs of games so that you can compare different players' approaches, or match your performance against SirPleb's. CRpSuite is here

Non seafaring galleys survive 50% of turns spent in dangerous water. So if you have to cross where there are three turns in sea or ocean, before astronomy, you have a 1 in 8 chance of getting across intact. You can usually improve your chances by building or capturing the Great Lighthouse, as this allows you to start and end on sea squares. It doesn't change the sinking probability on an ocean tile.

Wonder building takes a lot of shields. Particularly at higher levels, it's usually better to let the AI build them and then capture the ones you need.

Read RFHolloway's article on Settler Farms here to find out how to build settlers fast. Also have a look at Bamspeedy's definitive Deity Settlers pages, where he shows the turn by turn progress of a 4-turn settler farm.

Thx kindly AlanH. Nice info.. I did find the Curragh data.. 75% per turn for seafaring ppl, 50% for non .. I had very bad luck based on this.. it is a 4 turn leap at the most favorable point which should give about 1 in 3 chance (81/196), but I lost 12 Curraghs trying to cross before I finally got one over.. lol.. pretty sad.. hehe
