Should I retire from GOTM43 and start this one? I am not sure that 15 days between GOTM43 deadline and COTM13 deadline will be enough :hmm:

Does that mean no one starts with Alphabet? :mischief:
I wouldn't know. Preselection was by Renata's "fair" hand. I'm sure she'd give a sucker an even break

Thanks, Alan!

Re: alphabet -- actually, everybody starts with it.

...

Just kidding, just kidding, don't shoot me! You'll just have to download and find out. :) But for the record, I didn't fiddle with any default settings except as described above for the Conquest and Predator saves. Good luck!

Conquest 13: France

The earliest nomadic inhabitants of the Arabian Peninsula herded their sheep, goats, and camels through an unforgiving desert environment; while those Arabs who settled in the oases provided date and cereal agriculture as trade staples for Arab caravans that transported spices, ivory, and gold from southern Arabia and the Horn of Africa to the civilizations farther north.

Has anyone actually read the page description? ;)

The problem with finishing it is that I might sacrifice COTM13 (I do not want to do it). I probably will keep playing, until I get nervous about time, then I will retire.

Any pre-game tips for us lonely and lowly conquest players? I have only once tried Diety...

I get
- no Research (let the AI do that)
- Trade trade trade when ever/where ever you can (No monopoly tech and dont trade to only 1 AI, thans Bede for those lessons)
- Barrracks, build as little reg units as possible

Questions
- Walls?
- Granary?

any tips will be welcomed.....

Regards

@namliaM

I'm not that much of a deity-player, allways glad if I can get a win at that level.

But regarding your questions:
I wouldn't recommend walls. They are defensive structures and I'm a great believer in offensive power. So defend by attacking the invaders. At higher levels I mostly not attack immediatly after declaring war. I empty a border city just out of reach as a bait. When they invade I slaughter the invaders with my offensive force and after that invade them. With that strategy you encounter relatively few offensive enemy troops in hostile territory.

Granaries: only a few in the AA (1 maybe 2, 3 at most), and only in foodrich areas. Though I think COTMs are a bit better suited for building granaries as you can do a few chops to speed up the build. In deity-games I would typecally have a few cities with granaries building settler and worker and all the other cities will have barracks building offensive military.

Those military will be either warriors or chariots. Research will be practically non existent for saving money. And when the time has come for war I connect the iron or buy HBR, upgrade and declare.

And when the MA come and I'm getting far behind in techs I should have beaten 1 or 2 neighbours. I then start buying my techs and improve my empire by building marketplaces and libraries and revolt to republic.
Allways on the lookout to stir up trouble between the ai's and vulture on some carcasses. Just until you become one of the big dogs yourself.

Mind you: the above isn't like a supreme strategy, but it does keeps me alive at deity and can deliver a win.

@namlia

If I were playing on conquest:
Send scouts out North & West to find a quick second city spot. Consider 2N or close to that (I like 'em very close, like 3-4.5 for core ones, 5-7 for next area with my Forbidden Palace started in this range, usually first build for 5th-8th city). Worker goes to BG's and does Mine,Mine,Road,Road, Chop then road to 2d city. Build Warrior, Warrior, Granary (should be before size 3 if you do it right), Worker. Do max research to Republic Slingshot. After that may go to zero research, but depends.
I would only build 0-3 other granaries - usually my first 2 cities expand, my 3d does military and my first coast searches the sea. When I get some good corruption cities, the build workers while my core cities with the granaries grow as large as possible and go for whatever I need, usually barracks and then only military. It depends. Expand quickly and build military. Try not to fight too early, but the best players will sucker them like Redbad said, take 1-2 cities, sue for peace and get more cities for the peace. When you trade, get anything you can for it, even if it is just better relations. Only exception is a civ you want to attack soon - don't give them stuff that will help them become more defensive. Wonders - normally only capture. Walls - almost never.

Since we are continents, pray someone builds Great Library on your continent. With your Republic Slingshot, consider going for Literature and then trade it to all on your continent (after that may go to no research). Capture it last so you may get a real slingshot of techs if you've met everyone in the world (a technique I like is go to Chivalry, capture all but that city, capture that city - I've gotten slingshots to almost all the techs in the MA, upgraded with all the money I had, bought boats and was on the other continent 5 turns later ready for a major expedition). Always try to have another AI gang up with you. If the other continent can't reach you (or especially those on your continent that can't), consider doing 'false wars' - declare one, try to get another AI on that continent to join you. After 20 turns you may get decent stuff out of peace.

Hmm....Hope this helps. We'll see as I plan on doing something similar.

Yeah - we noticed that. ;)

Seems the 'wrong' page got released - we'll fix that in due course. :)

 :coffee:  :wallbash: :hammer:  Sorry!

Just wondering, but is there gonna be a hunting tips for this game?

Ok, another dumb question. Is 'Conquest' the only victory condition allowed or are we allowed other types of victory like domination? I'm thinking Conquest is the only one allowed since it's 'COTM', but also hoping since I might have a better chance with one of the other victory conditions :p

Also, I didn't make a save at 1000BC for the qsc. In fact I only made like 4 saves from the start of the game til where I'm currently at 960AD.... is this gonna affect anything?

Thanks.

1. All victory conditions are allowed. "COTM" refers to the fact that this series is placed with the Civ 3 Conquests expansion.

2. You only need a save at exactly 1000 BC if you plan to submit to the QSC competition. The number of saves you describe sounds reasonable.

3. There is to be no posting in the saves available or pregame threads once you have opened the game save. There's a PM feature on the board if you're can't find any other appropriate place to post your questions.

Hey guys, Im new to Civ 3, finally got the money to get it, after being a long player of Civ 1 and 2. I have been struggling adapting to the new game so far, but seem to be getting better slowly and slowly and was interested in sometime soon taking part in one of these COTM, however I am thinking that I might not be ready for this one since I have only just started playing on regent (I think thats the one, 3rd level up)...

Should I give it a go anyway? And basically all I need is 1.22 patched Conquests and just play as normal, without doing any reloading and not doing the other things it says on the site? Maybe I will give it a go just as a learning expereince in getting used to COTM.
