  • Absolutely NO discussion of any other currently active 'X'OTM!

Warlords should be a walk in the park, right? So, how's this random game panning out? Any nasty (or nice) surprises?

Founded Capital in place to go looking for a better 20K site.
Didnt really scout that much before sending settler to the second cow, which was a bit of a waste. 2 turns later I found the wheat by the lake with lots of bg and Hills.
So I built another settler asap and sent it there.
Went Temple (with a chop) and Oracle
Reached Republic in 1350 BC after a small diversion via CB as I found egypt a bit too late.
About 1000 BC I started war on egypt because he had started to encroach my position and actually claimed my iron. So I send a "Scout Team" of 4 archers, and that was all it took to destroy 3 cities, including his horses town. That send im into turtle mode until my swords arrived 15 turns later.

AI only provided Poly and Math to my research projects, but I still reached the MA in 350BC.

20K Schedule
BC1675 Temple
BC 875 Oracle
BC 800 Lib
BC 410 GLib
currently buildung FP

i needed to relax a bit on Warlord after my long working days... so i started this off. went towards the food (worker W)... and found: more food! good! otherwise this start would have been really slow.

when i saw how much land we had on this archi map, i went into a complete builder start. Philo in 1650bc, but only a few turns later i revolt to Rep. it took me forever to meet Egypt, and i let them alone since they are working on the Pyramids.

i myself will try my hands on 2 wonders, TGLight and Col, for GA and money. research won´t go far in the MA. the AS´s are of course pathetic and of no use at all. therefore, and since my ships see lots of land, i will go conquest, as i do not plan to play this game forever ;)

i forgot to stop when entering the MA, but that was some time around 900-800bc or so.

all contacts.

Spoiler :
- Moved settler 1W, found a cow. Moved 1SW to see if I found the coast, not by any chance, plus another cow appeared. Settled there anyway at 3900 BC.
- Went slingshot and since probably in Warlord the AI won't help me at all, set the tech tree all the way to CoL. Research is in 38 turns still on 3900 BC.
- 3700 BC -> Built warrior and sent it to explore. One cow is irrigated, don't wanna waste time roading it (maybe a mistake?) then set the worker to irrigate the other one also. Building another warrior to explore.
- 3500 BC -> Built the another warrior and sent it to south. Start to build a settler, it's in 6 turns without the other cow irrigated.
- 3200 BC -> Built settler, it's gonna be a coastal city.
- 3050 BC -> Second city is found and started to build curragh.
- 2850 BC -> Found a hut and a Civ border.
- 2670 BC -> Built curragh and start to finally explore. The warriors found another luxury resource pretty much far away. Usual tech trade with the Egypts, they are so weak I'm thinking about having some archers to destroy them. I'm not sure what I have to gain with this anyway.
- 2510 BC -> Third city found in between the other two, nearby a river. Warrior -> worker is gonna be. The capital is still making settlers.
- 2270 BC -> Found another civ border.
- 2230 BC -> Americans had nothing for me, only their 10 gold cash for Alphabet.
- 1990 BC -> Start to build the Colossus just after the second curragh was built was a mistake. I need more curraghs and there's no other coastal city.
- 1700 BC -> I've got a feeling I'm way too behind. Philo/Rep in 9 turns. I didn't like the resource's places on my island. Made contact with the French.
- 1675 BC -> Made contact wth China.
- 1475 BC -> Philo/Rep and Revolution.
- 1450 BC -> Made contact with the Indians.
- 1375 BC -> Become a Republic. Went Lit, silly hope that the AI will research something for trade.
- 1225 BC -> All libraries to be. And where are the Germans and the Russians? Can't find the only two sci civs anywhere.
- 1000 BC -> Researching Mysticism. I knew I was delay.
- 850 BC -> Colossus triggered GA. Not supposed to happen.
- 610 BC -> Enter MA. Research is in 6 turns, 90%. No Germans or Russians yet.
- 490 BC -> Researched Monotheism. No SGLs, Pyramids is being handbuilding, 4 turns left. Only one luxury resource. No iron, no horses. No Germans or Russians. AI that I've met are still on AA.

"No SGLs"

As far as I know, SGLs are turned off in GOTMs. They are considered too big a game changer as a random event.

Fine, didn't know about that, like I said, I never played a COTM before.

:)

I moved in range of the second cow, keeping both sugars within the 20 tile radius. I thought I should try a quick science game, although trade options for techs but also for gold would be limited at warlord. I managed to trade the first tier techs, horseback riding, polytheism and two turns of map making. But of course that trade frenzy will not reoccur in the later ages.
Embarrasingly, I did not know Germany when I entered the medieval period, which may or may not cost turns. I can only hope they will get feudalism while I race along the mono trail. The Medieval period was reached around 900-800 BC, which is also embarrassing since templar (Hello!) did the same without having any plans for a science rally whatsoever.
I found the Egyptians by the land route fairly early. The map is fun and a bit unusual for a random generated one.

I seem to have played the same game as Megalou, only I met the Germans but not the Russians. Thought I'd go for Space in order to prolong the game. Who knows when the next one starts? MA in 825 BC. Forbidden Palace built.

I don't think it very strange that Templar X is on par here, the initial priorities are the same for Conquest as for Space on an Archipelago map like this one.

Interesting. That's partly what makes it a good map I suppose, together with the unpredictable location of the Egyptians.

Nice to see some competition, although I'm not really interested in prolonging the game, since I have so little time. I might not have the chance to go all the way to space.

You're quite right, I was just trying to be amusing. He even wrote that he would go for knights or further.

Knights??? surely not! :D if i have money to waste i am going to ask my missus to check out the latest collection in her favourite boutique...

plans for MA research stop after Feud and Eng for me, the latter for planting and chopping towns if i should be in the mood for that.

Alright then. But if you don't need knights, what do you want with engineering? Landing MIs next to towns doesn't really call for bridges.

I should have go for conquest also, I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna have patience enough to play a Diplo game like I intended to.

I suppose he got them both for free, knowing both Germans and Russians when entering the Middle Ages, or he had to research one to get the other in trade.

no, as i wrote i want to plant forests. plus i want my troops to be more mobile on roads to get to their embarkment points on the home island/continent.
no gifting up of the AS in my game. i let them stay backwards and stupid, so my MIs have even easier fights.

went towards the food (worker W)... and found: more food! good! otherwise this start would have been really slow.

I also went towards the sugar, but instead of W I moved N :wallbash: I guess that's it for me in this game. More luck next time. :(
The idea was: the worker was to improve the starting square, which would finish just in time for growth to 2 (11 turns for chopping, irrigating & roading, 11 turns for moving the settler and growing to size 2). Also I wanted to get those grasslands, which were visible in the fog behind the mountains, into the BFC... (Used to civ_steve's sado-maso starts on Warland, I exptected the sugar and the grasslands to be our only food tiles...)
