COTM 44 Final Spoiler; Game Submitted

Reading Requirements:
You may only read this thread if:
  1. You have completed and submitted your game.

Posting Restrictions:
  1. None! As long as its related to the GOTM, and within the forum rules!
  2. And ... Absolutely NO discussion of any other active 'X'OTM contest!

Did your game make it to the later eras, or are you just now telling us about your early conquest? :)

20K culture win, 1876 AD. Not the best date, as I wasn't able to get Smiths or Cops (Maybe not Bachs either).
At the end just to run up my score, I conquered Egypt and carthage. I just made a ROP, and stationed 3 tanks outside their cities (5 for the large ones) and boom. Egypt was gone in 3 turns, and carthage was completely wiped off the mainland in 1.

Playing open - first Conquest submission.

Looked like settler was on the wrong side of the railroad (er, river) track, so sent worker climbing for look-see. Settled 1SW & went RCP3.

Grabbed as much territory as I could in the opening, and built enough military to keep Egypt and Carthage cautious. Avoided Chivalry, instead building a mass of cheap horses while keeping up with the Joneses in Tech. Upgraded horses to Calvary, got ROP with Egypt, and attacked Carthage by land and by sea. After finishing them off, went at Egypt from both directions and settled in for an easy diplomatic victory. Forgot to start a pre-build for the UN which delayed my finish many turns.

Open Class - 2nd time playing a COTM

Started expanding, had a small early MA war with Egypt, swapping a couple of cities around the borders (or inside my border). They decided to try again toward the end of the MA/ start of IA, again re-buffed and I grabbed some additional cities, including one Saltpeter source. Rest of the game was fairly uneventful... ended with Spaceship launch in 1784.

Predator, going for UN win.

I continued wars with Carthage and Egypt, then just sat still and ICSd most of the southern part of the continent for specialist farms. 4-turn research maintained throughout. (IIRC both Persia and Byzantines got Nationalism as their free tech, so no real help except to get me access to Cop specialists.)

In 1150AD I timed completing research of Atomic Theory with the Theory of Evolution and a Palace build.

Theory of Evolution gave me as free techs the final IA tech (Electronics), and Fission; the Palace pre-build was switched to the UN to complete that inter-turn.

The key when doing this is to make sure that the pre-build city is after the ToE city in the city list - otherwise the Palace will complete before ToE and the pre-build will be lost!

I won the vote against Gandhi 5-1 with the other Civs (myself included) all voting for me.

Result: UN win in 1160AD.

I finally got my first win in GOTM. I fought a few early wars with Egypt and crippled them. I finished them off in the Medieval Age. I overwhelmed Carthage with Cavalry around 1400 AD. I then invaded the other continent and quickly defeated the Arabians, the Byzantines, and Iroquois. I increased my population and culture and won a domination victory in 1660 AD. It's not the greatest win but I am happy to take it. :king:

Phew, finally finished.:coffee:

Played open and got a really late domination victory in 2029.

The Iroquois killed everyone, except for the Indians, Egyptians, Carthage (me and Egypt killed Carthage.), and France. I Destroyed the Egyptians, creating 2 armies of cavalry as I went. By the time I was ready to assault India, I had Tanks. I easily wiped the world of India, and started readying myself for an attack on the Iroquois. Built nothing but Tanks, Infantry, and Bombers for about 30 turns until my Military Advisor said my military was about average compared to theirs. I had about 106 Tanks, and then when I got Computers, 72 Mech Infantry, and 45 conscript TOW Infantry.

RoP Raped the Iroquois took most of their cities with Wonders, and then made peace, while switching back to Democracy from Facism, so I could gain culture in my cities.

Space Race victory, 1856 AD.

Well, this one was much easier thatn COTM43.

I wasn't really committed to playing in the beginning, as I didn't run into the Egyptians or Carthaginians until quite late and I got the impression I was on an empty continent. So I played it lazy, very little troops, high rate of expansion.

When I did run into the Egyptians, they perceived me as weak and started browbeating me. Same with Cartage, but to a lesser degree. I gave them a bone or two, then decided not to give in to them anymore. They declared war a few times, and made peace just as easily.

Early Medieval times the continent had pretty much filled up. I had claimed nearly half. Egypt again figured I was an easy prey and they declared war once again. They'd built the Statue of Zeus earlier, and used their vast cavalry army to quickly rush my defenses (which consisted of 1 spearman per town). I lost 4 towns in the initial rush, but managed to take them back over the next dozen turns.

I beelined for Military Tradition, got it, upgraded 40 or so Horsemen, and the rest was a cakewalk.

Military Tradition was finished in 920 AD, the Egyptians lost their top 6 towns in 940 AD and were off the map in 1000 AD. Saved me the trouble of having to deal with resistance. Cartage got the same treatment.

I considered building some ships and heading over to the other continent, but I'm really not much of a fan of messy conquests overseas. So I let the other civs be. They never really bothered me either. India declared war on me once. I responded by signing an alliance against them with all the others. Never heard from them again.

Since I had a diplomatic victory last game, I decided to go space race this time. I irrigated the entire continent, except around the top 2 producing towns, to maximize population and research.

And that's about that.

Why doesn't the Jason calculator have a template for COTM44 yet?

Congratulations! It's very good to see new players joining the GOTM, and I hope its fun and informative!

It should give you your Jason score when you submit your final save. I believe there's a Jason calculator on gotm.civfanatics.net that will give you a score based on inputs you set, but it doesn't get updated for a given game until that game is complete; players who have knowledge about how Jason calculates can derive unknown game information otherwise.

Right, thanks, first time I submit a game, so I did not notice that.

Moved one SW from the starting point to get the plains cattle in Paris' radius and built a handful of warriors followed by a settler. Research was writing-->CoL-->philosophy for the slingshot around 1400BC. I traded for masonry early with Egypt and went for the Pyramids first. Also built a library after popping literature from a hut and a temple before revolting for a 4-turn anarchy becoming a republic in 975AD. I entered the MA around 650BC trading for polytheism and researching construction.

The Great Lighthouse was built in 70BC starting a GA after which I Egypt dow'ed me. I signed an MA with Carthage and Egypt was gone some dozen turns later at the hands of a couple dozen knights. I then RoP raped the then unknown Carthaginians destroying them in a about 3 turns. These wars did not produce a gl for the Heroic Epic. Research was a beeline for free artistry and then magnetism getting only feudalism and chivalry from the ai. The IA was entered around 890AD.

In the IA I destroyed the Persians and the Iroquois and still had no leaders, but had upgraded most knights to cavalry. A war with India later produced the required leader for the Heroic Epic. At this point I was 50 tiles from the domination limit with eight luxuries doing 4-turn research the rest of the way. ToE completion was timed for entrance into the modern age which was entered in 1355AD gaining fission and computers. The ai's provided only medecine as well as several optional techs.

The modern age saw India dow me and they were destroyed giving me access to seven luxuries and trading dyes with the Arabs. I stayed 5 tiles from the domination limit the rest of the game and finished all culture builds in Paris in 1715AD. I had just researched future tech 2 when the game ended in a 20K victory.

Wow - I just submitted my game...wandered in here, and there are a pair of 20k wins that beat my 1890 win date.

@killerkid, PrinceMyshkin - Congratulations!

I built an insane number of wonders in Paris, just let the settler pump go too long and didn't get my ancient wonders built soon enough. I was able to build Pyramids and Great Library... along with most of the MA wonders and every single wonder from the Industrial Era forward. I even built Theory of Evolution after Hoover so I could snag Fission as my 2nd free tech...

This will look more like a milk run than a 20k win; my Firaxis score was 4,518 (7,234 Jason). Only Ghandi and Theodora remained on the planet with me at endgame. With an estimated 20 turns to go I got bored and helped Theodora annex the Arabian empire. I couldn't take it myself without tripping the domination limit... but I had to do something to get some use out of all those Stealth Bombers. :crazyeye:

i also have just submitted that one.

quite nice game with LOT of space to settle.
i settled in place and used wheats and FPs N/NW from Paris for settler factory in second city. it ran for a looong time.
FP was built on the NW west side of inner lake.
actually i had just two short wars with Egypt and Carthage at the beginning- so i let them live and destroyed their cities' dents. border stood for a long time in narrow part connecting north with south.

i decided to go for space ship VC. i was a tech leader almost from the beginning. strangely i had just few units for a while. only in late game i wiped Carthage and Egypt in 2-5 turns each, blitzed with cavs.

i got my golden age in late IA... accidentally. i overlooked two persian units that landed in my core during 4 turn 'hit-space/enter' research cycle.
GA was planned for ModAge, but well it turned out well. soon after that i took out Egypt, Carthage and ICSed their territory.

IIRC apart from miniutarization and electricity, everything after steam was a 4 turn research.
and i built in Paris copernicus+newton's+seti.... i don't remember building them ever before.

i've achieved SS victory in 1615AD (7564 Jason Score, 3467 Firaxis) with prebuild waiting for Robotics to be finished and launching the SS the same turn.
i usually had 6-7 luxes, got them from the other continent for techs.
to underline that this was peaceful game i will say that i haven't got any MGL, and just few elites during whole game. there really wasn't much fighting.

I had little hope of doing well in this one, with a late start and rushed play. Seems like I did pretty well, despite those handicaps. I had a long-running feud with Egypt and Carthage which ended with both pushing up daisies. After getting Astronomy, began my invasion with the Incense town built by the Byzantines. Worked my way up the tail of the dragon, first killing off the Byzantines, then the Arabs, then Persia, and finally the Iroquois. I stopped just shy of Domination, and considered my options. At this point, all VC's were still possible. After investigating Delhi, and finding 8 rifles there, I decided Conquest would take 15-20 more turns, and switched to Domination. With 16 tiles to go, settling 2 towns did it.

With all the open land available that early warriors discovered, I set about pumping out settlers and expanding before the Egyptians got there. I was successful at grabbing the western half of the continent. With so much expansion I suddenly realized I was following the same path as my GOTM42 debacle. (Under defended cities led to an early demise at the hands of the Iroquois.) I corrected this problem; this game turned out much better.

Entered the MA with only a short term plan. Feudalism, initiate GA with a short war, secure a second saltpeter, perhaps a MGL, add a few cities and pick up a few slaves. The war was completely successful for my objectives. :goodjob: Egypt was the target; they were neighbors and number two in score at this point. Carthage helped and carried the war far longer than the 20 turns I did.

And now for something completely different.:D (At least for me) At this point I decided to try for a diplomatic win. The conditions seemed right for this strategy. The other civ’s attitude toward me was polite (very unusual;) ) due to continued ROPs and profitable tech bartering. Secondly, a conquest or domination victory would have required me to send troops over seas which I was just not in the mood to do this game. I was looking to have a fast and simple game. So for the first time ever I used my MGL to rush the FP. I was really bothered by the fact that my cities SW of the capital across the big pond, which had potential to be decent production cities, were completely corrupt.

From this point on, I focused on racing through the tech tree. I did manage to build a few wonders though. (Hoover, ToE, Knights Templar (earlier) and of course UN).
Turns were very fast as I approached completion of the UN and I was starting to worry I would not receive the necessary votes for the win. The Arabs had fallen earlier in the game and I knew I would have only Hiawatha running against me. That left 5 votes up for grabs. Cleo was still furious so I couldn’t count on her. I had started gifting all kinds of things (techs, gold, GPT, a city, resources) and was only able to get Gandhi to turn gracious. With only two turns left I signed MPPs with Hannibal, Xerxes, and Theodora. Hannibal and Theodora both turned gracious. The vote was 5-2 in favor of Joan. Oddly, Xerxes who was still only polite voted for me also. I was under the impression that an attitude of any thing less than gracious would not garner a favorable vote.

Two things I found interesting in this game: This world seemed to be resource rich but luxury poor. I had no problems with resources in my half of the continent and was able to sell my extras many times. However, I had only two luxes and only ivory (Egypt) was ever available on the market. The second oddity was there were only 2 wars. One I started and the other on the other continent that quickly took out the Arabs.
The numbers here are not great but I’m still pleased with my first Diplo win.

Score 2207
Jason 5179
Diplomatic Victory 1774 AD.

Generally (in a standard-sized game with 8 civs including the human) there will only be as many luxuries on a continent as there are civs. So finding only 3 on the starting continent would be expected (with only 3 civs there).

If others didn't become available to trade, it's probably because the AIs on the other continent didn't build harbours. This is something they are often quite reluctant to do! I wasted 4 turns researching Navigation before checking that they'd built any....

20k cultural victory in 1615AD. Jason score 9900

Worker on mountain to reveal more tiles. Settled SW to get cow into city radius.
Maxed out pop/shields in capital ASAP so expansion was very slow. I had just 3 settlements and 18 pop at 1000BC.
Got Republic slingshot in 1450BC and revolted.
Built Pyramids (1475BC), Oracle (1025BC), Great Library (610BC) and Hanging Gardens (270BC) in Ancient Age. After AA beeline to Free Artistry to get Shake's Theatre ASAP.
Of corse did some warfare to get some leaders and more land for specialists.

Carthago delenda est - said the emperor of Rome-III with strange for French ear name "Vladimir", and the iron legions under the direction of Scipio Africanus ... oops ... Napoleon invaded treachery Carthage. But before this Rome-II was alredy subordinated to the Paris and treachery Egypt annexed. At the height of its power the Frank Empire gave factories to the world and made the first field gun with recoil system. The borders of the Frank Empire stretched to the shores of India.

Never thought I would finish this one...! After I submitted COTM43, there were only two weeks left for COTM44, so at first I planned to take two weeks off. Then I couldn't resist and started to play a bit, "just for practise"... But then I was making fast progress, resistence was low (compared to COTM43...;) ), and as I didn't spend any time on micromanaging, the turns went by quickly.
(Sometimes too quickly: the turn before I finished Egypt, I overlooked a plain archer next to undefended Carthage ("my" Pyramids town)! It wanted to move a Musketeer in there from nearby, but completely forgot and ended the turn. This delayed Egypt's end by two turns (had to move a Cavalry down there), lead to lots of war unhappiness and cost quite an amount of food in all cities, which grew during these two turns (had sold all my granaries after taking the Pyramids from Carthage) :hammer2: )

So when CivAssist told me the day before deadline, that I was only 85 tiles away from domination, I decided to sacrifice a night's sleep, start an invasion on Beta and take those missing tiles. This was accomplished at 1:37AM... :king:
Jason score 8590. My highest score ever! (I guess that says something about the quality of my micromanagement in the previous games... :D )

Nothing extraordinary to record here. Just this: for the first time in my life I used RoP rapes... Shame on me! But that was the only way to finish the game on time. Byzanz fell in one turn, Arabia in two, and a couple of turns later I only needed two turns to take out Persia except for one city. (And I begin to like it... :mischief: -- You guys over here do have a bad influence on me...)
