I've played Civ since the begining ,so I was really looking forward to civ 4 - its a heap of crap. It just crashes regularly. Basically firaxis I want my money back. Under the UK sales of goods act this does not do what it says on the packet , it is not fit for the purpose for which I purchased it. And I am therfore entitled to a full refund .

Well, you can ask the store you bought it from if they'll refund your money (some will be happy to do it for scratched discs while some don't give refunds, period), OR...

You could tell us a little bit about the nature of your problem and the specs of your rig, and maybe we can help fix em.

Have you tried installing the patch? Doing quick spyware scans? Installing your OS's automatic updates?

CRASH CRASH & CRASH! I feel better that someone can relate to my problems! On top of that..

So why are you complaining here? Contact Take2 for an RMA. Complaining here without giving details is just whining.

I installed Civ 4, and played a game successfully almost to completion. I saved the game, went to bed, got up the next morning, tried to load my game. It crashed to desktop. Ok, no problem. I loaded it again. Crash to desktop. Fine, I loaded my wife's game. Crash to desktop. I started a new game. My computer rebooted. I started a new game, crash to desktop when the terraforming was complete.

I uninstalled. Reinstalled. Installed the patch. No improvement.

The graphics worked fine. I had no motion jerkiness to the movies. The sound was great. The game was fantastic. I just can't get it to run.

My computer:
P4, Windows XP with HT, Nvidia card ( can't remember the number off hand, but I just got the computer a year ago, and it is a good card), tons of hard drive space, 1G memory. I exceed the standards for the game. Yet it crashes constantly.

Last night, I packed the disks up. I'm going to try to get a refund. I played Civ 3. Sigh, it is pale in comparison.

ANy other thoughts? I know that I am not alone in these problems. Somewhere, Firaxis screwed up--so many folks should not be having so many problems.

I have a similar problem, you can check my post for specs and specifics if you like, but I totally agree. I have no idea how else to fix these problems because I have tried everything so far.

I have Freeze problems. ANY time I try the game I'm subject to Freeze. 1 in 4 on Start up as its loading, 3 out of 4 by 1550 A.D.. I've got the patch, tried everything but sacrificing a goat and I'm frustrated. Great game for looks, but ......... Please Firxis, get it fixed. Using a 710S Gateway, P4 3200, 1 gig ram, Radeon 9600 pro. Machine is updated on XP to within the past week and has been spyswept weekly. HELP!!!!!!! or REFUND!!!!!! This games preformance comes close to fraud and violation of the truth in advertising laws.

How big is your virtual memory set to?

To change virtual memory:

Right-click My Computer > Properties
Advanced Tab > Performance > Settings button
Advanced Tab > Virtual Memory > Change button

I had a somewhat similar problem trying to load a multiplayer game that I played with 2 friends as a LAN game, and then we tried to continue it as a direct IP game later on, no matter who loaded the save file and hosted the game, it either crashed to the desktop or just locked up the computer entirely where the only recourse was to reset it. Other then this problem, I have had the ocasional crash, about once every 3 hours with the initial release, a couple times with the 1.09 patch, and have not experienced any crashes with the 1.52 patch... I was pretty pissed about the screwed up multiplayer game, but overall I find this game to be very stable with the latest patch:goodjob: CivIV is the best Civ IMHO. :)
