Crashes to desktop

I've been playing Civ 4 since Christmas without any problems at all. It's running on my laptop - a Dell Inspiron 6000 with 1GB RAM, 128MB video card, 1.73GHz Pentium processor. I'm playing on Terra, huge map (this could be the problem I guess), but there were no problems until now... I'm in the Renaissance Age the game keeps crashing to the desktop. No error messages, nothing.

Any ideas as to what could be causing this? I altered a couple of settings to improve performance (just basic stuff, I'm no computer expert), but it still crashes.

That sounds like the classic symptoms pre-V1.52 of the memory management hassles. Have you loaded the V1.52 Patch? If not, do so, its a must have Patch.

After that, if still issues please post the symptoms post-patching and your Dxdiag file

(Start Button - click - select run - type dxdiag - wait amin - select the "save all information" button - post using the 'go advanced' button below, and someone will pick you up from there

maybe one of the minimum requirements should be 1.5Ghz processor. I have a 1.1Ghz with AMD athlon and the game seems to suck up all the memory while running slow. I also get the choppy video and sound on the wonder movies.
I have updated all drivers etc. and upgraded what i could.

Try the V1.52 Patch if not loaded, it was mainly aimed at helping lower spec PCs. However it sounds as tho you are below minimum spec for the game, only just (1.1GHz, min is 1.2GHz). If you post your Dxdiag someone can have a look and see if there is anything else that may help

So since I am under the minimum spec for processor speed, is my only option an upgrade? It seems I have to continue pumping $$$$ into my PC just to play this game.

1.1 ghz is low, I would expect you to have no end of problems with Civ especially as your world gets more explored and settled.

I have the same problem. I downloaded the new patch and my computer is above minimum standards. I have the game since Christmas but it started doing this to me a month after.

Try turning down the resolution to relieve some of the video card's stress, then try again and let us know.
