Creating colonies and city liberation

I don't know how to post pics. Or saves. I have forgotten and frankly, at my age I am mildly allergic to learning new stuff.

Which I suppose is why I decided to go back to Civ IV and play rather than 5 or 6. :D

House rules: No war without valid casus belli. AI must declare first. Limited response: 3 rounds of war and max 6 AI cities acquired via war. So, I can't even clear my continent. Barbarians are fair game. So, I hop to the next continent where barbs have taken Paris and take that and ship over a settler to make a second city. Too far away to keep. Formed America. I shipped some more settlers for a couple of island cities. Well, later I am declared on and take some more cities on that continent and it's like the game doesn't recognize Washington as my colony and I have to create Carthage.

So basically, I was just looking to see what information I could find about colonies, which I have never played with in the past.

It is interesting to play, to me, without knowing how you can expand, trying to figure out who might attack and how to pick out the cities you want to take in revenge when you are attacked and incorporate them into play, knowing that culture is going to be a pain. Unlimited combat options are really a hack of the game mechanics and turns the game into an efficiency exam more or less. Mo thinking less momentum with these rules.

Now, in expanding on that continent after I formed the second colony, I exercised options on the two AI civs which had attacked me and vassalized both. I kept six cities that were closest to me, the game required I give the rest to Hannibal or keep them. I gave them to Carthage because of the maintenance problem. I control that continent now, but Hatty and Darius are both about 4 techs ahead and I have no casus belli against them.

I do have other war options from fighting off sea invasions from other villains. Maybe I will attack Khan and try to make a 3rd and a 4th colony on his continent. He has two vassals there and one has only one city left. Pacify the earth, lose the game. It passes the time.

I need to learn how to bait the AI into attacking if I ever play a game like this one again. Not being able to clear your own continent is a pain.

Okay, so I looked over the game again and I think I figured it out. Created the American colony by capturing a barbarian Paris and adding a settler to make a second city on the continent. I also donated a couple more settlers to expand the colony including several island cities.

Later war was declared on us, and the American capital of Paris was captured. This moved the capital to an offshore island city. When I then liberated Paris and donated it back to Washington the capital remained offshore. So, when the next war kicked off and I captured more cities America was probably no longer considered a colony on that continent. So, then I had only the option to create another colony. Technically then, I did create two colonies on the continent, but both did not have a capital on the same land mass at the same time. Game mechanics win again.

Still learning.

And 14 years later here I am to say that I did indeed get the option to create 2 colonies on the same continent, which I did do. BTS, last patch. I never played with colonies enabled back in the day but now playing with a limited combat ruleset I found this when I attempted to add captured cities to the first colony I created. Any additional cities I acquired on this continent I can either keep or give to the 2nd colony. Poor little Washington.
Replying just to say you're awesome for actually updating this with the results.
