Creating colonies and city liberation

I conquered two cities overseas (in a separate continent than me, beyond ocean), and in the very first turns I had the chance to "liberate" them and give them to their former owner (and obviously, I didn't do it!).

After some turns, I wanted to create a colony with those two cities, but in the domestic advisor screen, the icon was disappeared.
Is it possible to create colonies with conquered cities? Or maybe do I need to have a bigger cultural influence in those cities?

I don't know. I have also a question about this "colonie" feature. I placed to of my cities at overseas little island (tiny map), but I can't make colonies of them. Can you only make colonies of your cities if they are placed on real new continent'?

I guess, ain't 100% sure, that you need to have at least 3 cities on the same continent to create a colony.

No, its two.

IDK why you arent allowed to make a colony of them... maybe the cities are in your cultural borders? I dont think you can colonize a city within your borders.

Ok, I just experience something a bit odd in a game. Shortly after the (advanced) start, my closest neighbour - on another landmass, had his 2 cities captured by Barbs. It was a fixed thing via the WB, to spur on a close but strong Barb civ, and get rid of a too close neighbour.
After taking these 2 cities, I had only the opportunity to Liberate them to the closest neighbour (who now had a few cities on this landmass). Why couldn't I make it a brand new Colony, and create a new AI?

Does anyone have some insight into this?

Same here. 3 cities on the other continent, one settled by me, 2 captured from barbs, one of them still in revolt. There's no option to make a colony.

It's 2 cities not 3 cities, for sure. And those cities need to be on the same island/continent.

(and this is just a guess:) maybe the cities that are in revolt don't count and you'd have to wait until they are out of revolt.

I believe that if you start the game with the full 18 civs possible, you will not be able to create any Colonies as there is no room left for the new AI player.

I believe that I read that somewhere on this forum.

Basically if you want to start a Colony, play with less Civs at the start.

First off, when did it change from 3 to 2 cities? I was under the impression that it was 3... could be wrong I guess.

Anyway, the cities have to be on another landmass other than your main cities, there has to be less than 18 civs total (that includes destroyed civs), and it has to be a collection of 3 (or 2) cities on the same landmass.

All you have to do to create the colony is hit <F1> then select one of the cities on the other landmass, and a small window should pop up and give you a list of all the cities that will be turned into the colony. If you do want to have your own city on that landmass though, build the colony first and then build the city that you would like to own. If you do it the other way around all the cities on that landmass will convert over to the colony. Hope this helps.

1.) Creation of colonies is two, always has been two.
2.) You cannot create a colony if there are already 18 civs currently in the game. There are mods on this board that will allow you to get around the 18 civ ceiling.
3.) EDIT: If you already have a colony on a continent, you cannot create a new colony on that continent, you can only just gift cities to that colony. (This doesn't appear to apply to other vassals, though.)

3.) If you already have a vassal on a continent, you cannot create a new colony on that continent.
Not true or at least it doesn't work that way in the game I'm playing. I share a landmass with the Ottomans who are my vassal and I have the option to create a colony out of the other cities I hold there.

I suggest everyone that plays with 18 regularly, upgrade their CvGameCoreDLL.dll file to one that allows more than 18 civs - hopefully Firaxis will do it in a patch for those that don't feel comfortable doing it themselves...
But it's really easy, just replace the CvGameCoreDLL.dll file here:
C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Assets
(assuming you installed in the default location)
with the CvGameCoreDLL.dll file here:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=192620
(pick the civ-limit you want and the version you need - Warlords or BtS)

That will replace your default file, but since all it changes is the civ-limit, that's not a big deal.

I think I know what my problem was
No Feudalism.

EDIT: Never mind, just I checked it myself. You are right. The game appears to differentiate between colonies and vassals for this purpose. You can have a vassal on a continent and still settle and form a colony on that continent. You can't have a Colony, though and form another colony on that same continent -- you will only have the option to liberate cities to the existing Colony.

Eh, I am not sure but it seems like colonies were created on automatic if you don't have enough influence/culture. I had Lincoln spawn on one of my newly conquered continents and I am not even sure this is a good thing since there were 12 cities on that continent and now all of them belongs to Lincoln. I am not sure how you can do this manually.

Welcome to the forums!:band: If you're not playing a mod, colonies aren't created automatically. You have to let them go. The culture flip is different but that would be for individual cities.

That said, I don't know how to do it manually. I usually run SP by the time I have extensive holdings on another continent and I have concerns/issues with colonies. I've never been tempted to create them, although I do vassalize freely.

Nope - they're not created automatically. What happened was that you got a popup recommending that you create a colony because their expenses were high - and you clicked "sure". I did this a few times as well when I was still learning the game. Go back to an earlier save and you will see what I mean.

You can create them from the F1 screen - on the bottom right there will be a fist icon - if you have Feudalism.

And 14 years later here I am to say that I did indeed get the option to create 2 colonies on the same continent, which I did do. BTS, last patch. I never played with colonies enabled back in the day but now playing with a limited combat ruleset I found this when I attempted to add captured cities to the first colony I created. Any additional cities I acquired on this continent I can either keep or give to the 2nd colony. Poor little Washington.

Really? That's interesting?
