I played a little with the civ editor, but I'm a little confused about how it all works. In SMAC, you could create a faction and just have it added to the list of factions to be chosen from. In Civ3 do you have to replace one of the civs you already have? Also, with the rules page, map page, etc. how do you JUST edit a civ and still play with a random map, same ol' rules, etc.?

To edit the rules and play on just random old map, dont use the Civ3Edit, but rather use the Civ3Mod, located within your civ3 directory...the Civ3Mod modifies the rules for random games...the Civ3Edit is for created a scenario...LMAO...for the future use of i should say...

oh, yeah..forgot your other question...about adding in new civs, someone has made some Mod or something that allows you to just Add new civs without replacing an already existing civ, but I dunno where to get that at anymore...

Thanks for the help! I used Civ Mod and changed the name of the russians, the city names and the leader name and gender. When I loaded the file to run it, I got a "illegal operation" error! Any ideas why?

Basically, you can use the hacked CivEdit to add a civilization. It works well enough EXCEPT that the game will crash at the Freign Advisor screen.

Why? Well, piecing together everything I have read here, I think it comes down to some portraits (what face goes with what race) being linked in hardcode.

Oh sure, it's listed in Pediaicons.txt file, but I (and others) have messed around with it to no end only to have weird problems arise. These problems indicate that a linking system other than the one in the .txt file is being used.

Sounds like you might have made a simple mistake somewhere that's making civ3 think your new civ is not a legal civ. Try reverting to the original civ3mod.bic file and retracing your steps one at a time. In other words, first change ONLY the name of your civ and try that. If that works, THEN change the gender, etc. This should minimize any mistakes and also help you narrow down exactly where the error is, if any exists.
