Creating Units

One of my newest ideas is based upon Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri: the idea of custom-creating your own custom units. Explanation follows.

A player starts out with only one weapon: the Hatchet (:strength: 1), and only one mean of transportation: Foot (:move: 1). They are allowed to create any units out of the weapons and transportation methods they know. In the beginning of the game, this means only one potential unit: a sort of "slow scout" or "weak warrior", which will be referred to as Militia, at :strength: 1 and :move: 1.

As a player discovers new technologies, they learn new Weaponry, Transports (transportation), and Special Abilities. For instance, when a player discovers Hunting, they learn the Club weapon, at :strength: 2, allowing the player to build a CIV Warrior for the normal :strength: 2 and :move: 1. Likewise, when a player discovers the Wheel, they reveal the transport Horse (:move: 2) and can build units such as the Chariot, provided they have access to the resource Horses. The two "weapons" of Supplies and Tools are available at the beginning of the game, but have no strength. They are used to build the Settler and Worker units, respectively.

Special Abilities work slightly differently. Such abilities include Enslavement or Amphibious. A unit can have only one special ability, which gives it, well, a special ability: some sort of feature only units with the SA have. The Enslavement SA, for instance, would work in which a unit defeated by a unit with Enslavement has a 1-in-3 chance of not dying, but instead switching sides to the victor's civ. The Amphibious SA allows the unit to attack naval units if it is a land unit.

I'll probably expand on this idea more soon. Until then, comment on it!

I've always liked designing units in Alpha Centauri. The only reason for it to not be in civ is civ is [semi-]historical. Otherwise, I know I'd love to have a mounted maceman. If combined with UU, a mounted Samurai would be awesome too :)

I think another idea would be is if you win with many of one unit, you create a special unit of it- ie, you don't get samurai until you win with macemen.

Seems like this system would work a lot better than it did in SMAC. That system was pretty boring as the best units were min-maxed in order to be cost-effective. Making a totally tricked-out unit just lead to exorbitant costs.

i don't get how researching wheel would reveal horses, but i guess that's not too important. even still, it sounds kind of tedious to me.

I think unit workshop doesn't fit Civ. c-evo has it, and the result is rather bland units without character imo. As soon as you get a new tech, you'll redesign your units. It's probably good for wargaming, but it really lacks character.
With such a system, you'd trash unique units. Not necessarily a big loss, but flavour would suffer.

yeah, really the best way to do something like this would be just to have bland units with equipment, but there are already games that do that and civ should stick to what it already does best.

Maybe I'm mad, but I never liked the unit customisation thing in SMAC. It just made the units very confusing and indistinct and I never felt I could really do anything actually better than the automatic units.

It's possible I just didn't understand how to use it properly though.

A custom units system seems to work better in space- or naval-themed games where you have a whole ship to play with, rather than one man with one weapon and maybe some armor.

I would rather just be able to customize the look of the unit and/or make minor tweaks via "free promotions" than full customization ala SMAC.

Why this idea is awesome:

-Navy seals on elephants
-Trebuchets with nuclear payload
My first thought was that this kind of thing isn't very realistic or historically accurate. Then I realised that combining modern and ancient technologies in weird and wonderful ways has nothing to do with history and that any modern nation could theoretically product these things if they actually made any sense.

So, what I want is a random event where an AI leader goes senile or something, takes leave of his/her senses and starts sending nuclear elephants at you. Gold.

Sounds like a cool mod where cybernetic mutants are developed/producible. Would make for some interesting unit graphics for sure!

It's almost as if Firaxis should implement the mechanic then just not implement it so modders can use it.
