Crime Rates

Yeah I think it is the media that makes it seem worse than it sounds. I mean comparing Hong Kong to the states, US local tv report (at least in Portland) at least 5 criminal actions a night, whereas in Hong Kong I think I only remember 2 news reports concerning a murder during my 14 years living there.

Crime rates in Rio and Brazil as a whole are now higher than ever, and it does get a bit scary at times. Basically there are some parts of town that would mean death to go at night. The number of robberies is insane.

But of course, with some precautions(like avoiding huge areas of the city) one can live a normal life.

Be smart, and you will be safe.

Pack a gun while your at it.

Solution to avoiding high crime rates? Move to a wealthy neighborhood.

As sad as it is, that's really true. Here in what's one of the whitest, richest communities in Alberta, crime seems to be non-existant, and I've seen cars left running on the street at midnight, and nobody seems to care. It's wierd.

I would disagree with this, its not the wealth. You can have a poor neighborhood with a tight community and non-existent crime. Living in Houston, I have actually seen very wealthy communities fall into dangerous crime because of a lack of morality and community... money does not equate to good behavior.

Packing a gun is neither smart or safe.

You're entitled to your opinion, no matter how wrong it might be. ;)

Tell that to a soldier or police officer.

It is safe if you are trained how and when to use it and are mature enough for the responsibility.

It is smart if you live or work in an environment that it may be needed.

You may be surprised how many of us have concealed carry permits. ;)

Not in the UK. Carrying a concealed weapon makes you a valid target for our (few) armed police and marks you as a 'player' if you are in gang territory. You need to check saltymud's location before offering advice....

So are you saying the police in the UK find you 'guilty' somehow just because you have a gun? That doesn't sound very fair or impartial does it? I prefer innocent until proven guilty myself.

As I'm an American, and it was my comment, by your own criteria perhaps you need to check my location before offering advice....

Your comment didn't address or refute my statement that those of us with the training and maturity to legally carry a weapon are a crime deterrent while we are doing so. If you know a man has a gun are you more, or less likely to try to commit a crime in his presence?

Hard to tell as Canada's laws regardling guns are more similar to the UK's than are America's, but hey, Canada and the UK both have far lower crime rates than America so we must be doing something right. :D

What world are we living in? We are living in a world with dickheads, murderers, rapers, prostitutes, burglers and gangs. I am only 13 now, but when I get older what will the world be like? I am scared to grow up, and I shouldn't be. I really wish thoses idiots would just, well, cease to exist.

I want to know what some of the older members of these forums, (30-40s) thought of the crime rates when you were my age. I want a comparison to make a prediction of what world I will be in.

When I become a millionare, I am going to move my whole family to a nicer country, e.g Australia and New Zealand.

Couple of things you should know.

1. I have no idea where you live, but in the USA for example the overall crime rate has been falling for the last decade pretty much across all types of crime. Things are definitely getting better.

2. Dont move to Australia to avoid crime. Its one of the more violent countries on earth according to the UN.

We Brits exported convicts to the colonies
that became the USA and to Australia.

We did not export convicts to Canada or to New Zealand.

And today's crime rates still show that.

Your jingoism is slightly misinformed. The UK has a higher violent crime rate than the USA does.

Nice try.

That is more to do with the fact that the leftwing softies here
foolishly abolished capital punishment and it is illegal for civilians
to carry fire arms so that the criminals will rob one with impunity,
and the government won't deport convicted foreign criminals who
feel free to swarm to Britain like flies to a piece of smelly chite.

Setting the UK aside, the last comparison I saw of crime rates was
that Canada and New Zealand were lower than USA and Australia.

Yes, it is illegal to carry a protective weapon. It is also illegal to injure burglars. :dubious: What type of horsehockey law is THAT?
