Criticism & Suggestions Appreciated

What about chopping the second (and third) worker, so you can build your cottages faster ;)

But I would say 50% of my starts end up like this one. After my iron mine got annexed by a neighboring city as a result of cultural influence, I threw my hands up.

In a nutshell, you simply have to take it back. Saddle up the boys and work over the offending city/cities. You don't even have to go for a knock-out blow: capture or raze a city or two, then hold your ground until you can get a peace treaty.

How do you guys prevent settlers from getting eaten by animals? Do you always escort them with a warrior?

I almost always escort. Needlessly losing a settler is like throwing turns down the drain.

Also, do you guys usually settle within a few spaces of where your settler starts the game, or do you wander around a lot before you set up your first city? If I wander a lot, I'm more likely to lose the settler, and fall behind during those important early years.

95% of the time I'll settle right where they put me. I'll only move if there is a premo spot very close by.

Also, when you say I've been building them by hand, are you suggesting that I should instead use the worker to chop the trees and help speed production?

I've started doing this more recently. Personally I find it cheesy, but it does shave turns.

Nowadays, I rarely chop forests to rush worker and settler. Unless I'm building worker/settler and I really need put a cottage on a forests, then so be it. Otherwise, I don't chop forests to rush worker/settler.

And for the record, I don't do "slavery" either. For some reason, every time I win a game, some people ask me if I abuse the whip. Unless I capture a big city above size 8 or something or many homeless citizens are going to die of starvation anyway, I will grant them a meaningful death by asking them kindly giving their lives to hurry a courthouse or something. Other than that, I don't whip.;)

@MikeEdward: Since you were upset about losing your iron mine, I was just showing you how to get it back. My moves weren't optimal and there were plenty of room for improvement. Like the people above me have said, you can get better result by chopping the forests to rush the workers/settlers. Their advices were good. You may want to consider that on your next game. Other than that, I think you did good and your game can be won. If you have any doubt about my advices, check out some of my games at HOF. Have fun!

Are there any particular reasons why you don't chop and whip?

and i laughed when i saw your name on the HOF moonsinger, im thinking of trying a game for that soon :)

I really appreciate all of the advice, particuarly from Moonsinger.

Great ideas, and I'm going to start testing them this weekend.

My goal is to no longer stink at Civ!
