Croatia

Well they have tried to genocide each other numerous times. I can see how that can seed a little resentment.

100 years ago nationalism in ones nation was king and hatred of all neighboring nations was mandatory...

plus who could blame them when the majority of the time it was the neighboring country who either stole land from them or made war or culture whored all the nice stuff...

In all seriousness I have a lot of relatives that live in Croatia since after the split from Hungary they were too rooted in their villages to move and who can blame them.

The half of my family that is Hungarian is only Hungarian by a few miles...(G-ma's farm is right on the Austria-Hungarian border) and my Grandpa is from a major center of industry in the southwestern section so his ancestors may have been Croatian...plus he always told us about places along the Croatian highways which were dangerous for tourists...mostly since the Iron Curtain had just fell and a lot of stupid tourists were getting robbed(he avoided trouble since he spoke Croatian/Croanish(spelling) and served in the Hungarian army so he was no wimp)....probably calmed down by now...

I visited Croatia last year.
Dubrovnik and Plitvice are must-visit places if you go to Croatia.
There are more interesnting places I visited such as Trogir, Sibenik or Split, however IMHO they do not worth as much as Dubrovnik and Plitvice

I'm told that it's the nicest of the Balkan countries and they have a severe distaste for Serbs.

To be fair, the feeling is mutual.

Depends on who they are. Very few of the Croats and Serbs I know are nationalistic orifices.
Many are quite politically illiterate though and insist that this or that war criminal just 'fought for his country'. I also find the political climate in Croatia quite unlikeable. When I watch Croatian or Serbian TV at my parents' place the Croats tend to be disturbingly patriotic and the Serbs look more like a bunch of Tito nostalgists. BuIt has improved somewhat in recent years.

I thought that was Slovenia?

Tell that to a Slovene and he'll slap you harder than an Eastern European Pole or Czech .:D

I'd say the ratio of normal people to raging nationalists in both countries (Serbia and Croatia) is about 50:50. It all depends on who you run into. I'd say rock/punk music and movies has had a lot in calming down the passions.

Yeah, but such raging nationalism in Croatia seems more opaque, as GoodSarmatian was getting at.

That said, when I take my Grand Tour de Balkans, several places in Croatia are most certainly towards the top of my visiting list.

EDIT: X-post w/Nedim ;)

It depends on where you land, some places in Serbia are downright medieval. (as are some places in Croatia)

Bosnia is worth a visit.

Well... I am part Croat (Grandfather was 100% Croat, my Croat great grandmother died in 1992, same year I was born, at the age of 106 in December!) and I am Christian so..... Would I die? :p

Well they should leave me be. "I'm part Croat bro, leave me be, NOOOOOOOO,DO NOT TAKE MY WALLET!":eek:

We should organize a Balkan CFC meet up.

Sure. ;)

I have Croatia on my list of places to visit at some point, most specifically Plitvice Lakes National Park

I haven't done any further research because I'm not sure when I'm going to be able to go there.. but.. Split and Dubrovnik would probably be on my list too

I've been here. And trust me, it's even more beautiful than your picture; and I was there during a gray day.

Plitvice is one of the most beautiful places I've been my whole life.

Bosniaks like Croats.

Stay out of the Serbian part though.

The Serbs in Bosnia tend to be slightly more nationalistic than the Serbs in Serbia.

I dont know....if you are implying would you be killed because your a Croat.....lolnope. Sure we had a few wars, but we aren't murdering each other now. We aren't such savages.

EDIT X post: Meh few people like or hate based on just nationality or religion.... I've been to 80% Serb populated towns, I've been to Croatia, I wasn't discriminated against or let alone attacked. We do have law, its not bloody anarchy here.

If you went up to everyone and told them you were Croatian and that this loose genetic connection was the reason you're a Croat, then yes you would. But then you'd find the same outcome in every other country in Europe

EDIT: Bonus points for heavy American accent and garish mispronunciations in an attempt to sound "local".

Really? Cause I've been traveling round its highways for most of my life and havent seen one. Maybe a few off the main road in the east where the war devastation was the greatest, but that was years ago. Anyway it's like any place in the Balkans, hilarious, bigoted, slightly dangerous depending on your behaviour, looks and location and with lots of hot, moderately easy to seduce women.

i saw a big one with three convicted war criminals and the text "you were, you are, you'll stay... heros" just last year.
