CS Slingshot?

Has anyone tried the PCS slingshot with Catherine? Nationalism could lead straight to Military Tradition with Music (a quite easy tech to get) and then suddenly you'll be stomping round with 18 str Cossacks, they'll eat anything up to riflemen alive.

I don't think this will work.
You will hardly be able to research Philosophy or Divine Right before the Oracle is built.

I tried the PCS slingshot today and can simply not get it to work.

The Great Prophet NEVER gives me researching Civil Service as a tech to research, its always some low-level tech like Polytheism etc.

I tried another time researching these before i used my GP but someone always pips me to Oracle by the time they are all complete.

So i played a game with no AI, all by myself, and the only time i got Civil Service as an option for a Great Prophet was after i'd spent loads of turns researching all the low-level religion techs.

Say then you manage this, and get Civil Service through your Prophet, AND you complete the Oracle next turn (which you've had completed in your build queue for ages now). Nationalism isn't an option, as you need Philosophy before you can get it. And for Philosophy you need to research through Alphabet AND Drama, both heavy duty techs.

Not to mention you've gimped your rapid expansion so AI/Players have taken up most of the continent by now.

I just simply cant see the PCS slingshot EVER working. And if you are playing against player that are crap enough not to attack you while you're busy doing all this, i'm sure you could beat them in some other way with one hand tied behind your back.

Its a shame, cos then you could get Music + Military Tradition, and be stomping around with Cossacks when everyone else is still defending with archers.

Yeah, it's practically impossible. In fact, I recall making fun of the poster for suggesting you could ever get Nationalism with the oracle, but evidentally I thought better of that before I submitted.\

However, using a Great Prophet to pull Civil Service in a couple of turns is very viable. I really only bother with Masonry when I want the Great Lighthouse, or perhaps to quarry marble for the Parthenon, so I find myself using a Prophet in this way every time I either build Stonehenge or found a religion (thus have temples and can run a priest specialist).

I've never done a PCS slingshot with anyone, let alone Catherine. The best thing about that plan, imho, is that it gives you 2 shots at CS - Oracle and GP - so that if one of them fails for some reason the other will still be an option. Up to Prince I can pretty much always get it one way or the other. Monarch makes the chances drop significantly but in pursuing both it gives a decent chance.

Plus, if you pull it off with the Prophet, you can use the Oracle to head down another tech path. For example, Prophet to CS and Oracle towards Machinery for an early Macemen/Samurai rush.

The PCS isn't too hard. Just don't research masonry. You need poly and buddism, but you can often trade for those.

That's to avoid the Great Prophet wanting to discover Monotheism and whtever techs leading from it right?

Yeah. If you get masonry the GP will want to discover monotheism, even if you want him to found code of laws. Those pesky prophets have a mind of their own!

You'd still need gunpowder to build Cossacks/Calvary.

And now with the latest patch for warlords CS requires mathematics and is even more less likely to be achieved with a Prophet.

Yes, adding mathematics as a prerequisite for civil service changes everything.

I always tend to get mathematics earlier than later anyway, but the oracle always seems to get built way before I get that far. I haven't picked anything other than metal casting for months now if I ever choose to build The Oracle, which is rarely. Colossus, Pyramids, Sangkore, I don't usually build many others. Units feed my war machine so I end up with many more of the wonders through conquest.

Just on lightbulbing a Great Prophet to research (most of) Civil Service while avoiding Masonry ...

... according to DaveMcW's Great People Tech Prefences, Masonry has now been lifted above Civil Service, thereby effectively forcing the player down the Monotheism and Theology path. Without testing it, it's still possible to slingshot towards the completion of Civil Service with a Great Prophet provided you avoid Monarchy (prerequisite for Divine Right).

So, it's not only Mathematics' new role as a prerequisite for Civil Service, it's also the change in technology preferences if aiming to 'lightbulb' a Great Prophet.

1. Research Code of Laws
2. Build the Oracle
3. Choose Civil Service

I prefer to use Oracle to get the CoL. The sooner the better, as you grab a free religion with it.

Now that you need mathematics to grab CS, I almost always use the oracle to grab theology for a free religion and theocracy to go warmongering.

I did that once but I played the scenario real badly. I should have tried again. That tech path set me back so far that the AI had Liberalism by the time I made it to Currency. That was my last Emperor attempt with 2.08 before moving back to Monarch. The extra boost the AI got seems to make that level out of reach for me.
