ct3 - Chieftain Training Day (for newbies only)

Good! This will be fun.

Need to ask some questions. We download the original game as posted by Chieftess, put it in our save folder in the game, then play it? Then when it is our turn, we download the game the other has played, put it in our save folder, play our 10 turns taking notes - THEN, do we send that saved game as an attachment to this thread?

Ok, this is how we'll play:

The first player plays 10 turns, then posts a turn log, and the game save. I will then comment on both the log and the save. The next player can't play until I do that.

Anyway, a minor change. :)

The first round of this game will be 20 turns. So, it's

20/10/10/10/10....

All right, lets get this thing started! :)

Any preferences regarding playing style?

I am an opportunistic builder (attack when profitable, build and expand)

I think I know how to send the game as an attachment. But when the game gets bigger, I'm not sure how to zip it in order to send it to the forum.

I have Win Zip. But I've never zipped anything. Only unzipped. :(

stwils:(

I am in same boat as stwils - is there a site to go to that explains this? Ready to play but want to have all the gears in order.

Ok, to upload a file (I can't use the forum upload on mine - so I'll show you how to do it from your post):

Simply write the location of the file in the File Attachment box. It is case sensative, so CT would be different than ct.

BTW, you should be using v1.29f for the saves. They're compressed, so the file size is smaller than say, 1.07. :)

But, add it to a zip file (use winzip).

OK. To run WinZip (for those that haven't):

Start WinZip. Hit the "New" button, or use the menus "File/New Archive". Navigate to wherever you want to save the zip file, and name the file. (Use a name like "ct3-4000bc.zip -- something descriptive.) DO NOT use any spaces or underscores (_) in the file name. (I'll explain why in a minute.)

Now click the "Add" button, or use the menus "Action/Add". Navigate to the location of your save file. (Probably "C:\Program Files\Infogrames Interactive\Civilization III\Saves")Select the correct save file. Click Add.

Now simply exit WinZip. You save file has been zipped and saved in the location you specified in the first step.

Now, to upload your zipped save. (Thunderfall would appreciate us attaching as few saves as possible in the thread, because it takes up forum server space. If we upload the saves, and link to them, they take up file server space, of which there is much, much more available.)

Go to the bottom of this page, and you will see a list of links near the bottom. On the right is one labeled "Upload File". Click on this. A dialog box will pop up to take you through the rest of the way.

In that dialog box, click the "choose" button opposite the label "File 1" Again, navigate to the directory that contains your zipped save. Select your file, and click "Open". Your file will be listed in the box next to the choose button. You may add additional files (up to 3) like any map jpegs, or whatever. When finished selecting files, click the "Upload!" button.

You have now successfully zipped and uploaded your save file.

To link to your save file, in your post simply include the string: http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads/yourfile.zip -- replacing "yourfile" with the name of the zipfile you uploaded. (Note: this is why you should not include spaces or underscores in your filename - the upload system will accept them, but the linking protocol doesn't like them, and will give errors if they are encountered when someone clicks on the link.)

You can link to an image (picture) file you uploaded by enclosing the same string (replacing "yourfile.zip" with the name of the jpeg/gif/png that you uploaded) inside [ IMG ] [ /IMG ] tags.

stwils:

I received your email, but could not respond as you have disabled email to you from within the forum, and the address passed is incorrect - home.com no longer exists (I used to be at home.com also).

I am better able to respond via PM anyway. If you have a problem with that, let me know.

Chieftess, In most of these TD Games, the "veteran" has played the first 10 - 20 moves. If it is alright with you, I can play them, or you can, if you would rather. It would give the rest of the players an idea of what is expected of them on their turns, as well. :)

ok. Well, this is my first go at it, but if you want, sure. :)

Other players:

A standard Succession Game rule is: 24 hrs to post a "got it" message, then 48 hrs more to play and post turn results. This may seem slow, expecially when your are champing at the bit to play, but it provides for a steady flow to the game, and allows fairness for those who may be unable to grab it "right now".

Turn 0) 4000 BC: This is an interesting start. We have two wines to the north and northwest of us, and a wheat to the south. We are also within sight of the coast, but not on it. I decide to build right where we are. We can build another city on the coast later, if needed. (I don't know if this is pangea, continents, or archipelago, yet.)

Persepolis founded. Warrior ordered up. I send the worker south to the wheat.

Turn 1) 3950 BC: Aargh! I forgot to choose an advance to research last turn. Chieftain is pretty forgiving, though, so it shouldn't be a major mistake. I go with Warrior Code, but drop research down to 20% (40 turns). This gives us 3gpt income, and on a small world, we should see some neighbors to trade tech with soon. The worker starts mining the wheat tile.

Turn 2) 3900 BC:

Turn 3) 3850 BC:

Turn 4) 3800 BC: Mine complete, worker now building road.

Turn 5) 3750 BC: Warrior complete, start another. Warrior climbs the wine hill NW to get a better look aroound. Looks like we are on a peninsula.

Turn 6) 3700 BC: Road complete, worker moves to Wine due north. Warrior explores.

Turn 7) 3650 BC: Worker starts mining wine plains.

Turn 8) 3600 BC:

Turn 9) 3550 BC: Another warrior complete. I decide to build a barracks next. (I hate non-vet units. :D ) I send this warrior exploring north. (The other is working south.)

Turn 10) 3500 BC: Our borders expand. Mine complete, start road.

Turn 11) 3450 BC:

Turn 12) 3400 BC: Exploring SE, a warrior sees a dark border. This will be the land of the Zulus. (Others I know about (F11 key) include the Babs, Egyptians, and Greeks.) We also see Spices between us and the Zulu. Closer to the Zulu, though, so we probably won't get them. Worker completes road, and goes north to start another, to lead to another possible city site.

Turn 13) 3350 BC: Worker starts road. Goody hut spotted in SE. Warrior moves toward it rather than to Zulus.

Turn 14) 3300 BC:

Turn 15) 3250 BC: Warrior pops hut - Bactrians give us another Warrior. He moves east, and sees... Gems! Also another border - the Babs.

Turn 16) 3200 BC: North Warrior sees tip of our peninsula. Waorker continues road.

Turn 17) 3150 BC: Persepolis completes Barracks, and starts ... Settler!

Turn 18) 3100 BC: Road complete, bring worker back to do improvements around Persepolis.

Turn 19) 3050 BC: Worker begins mining Wine Hills. I make contact with Hammurabi. We decide to trade Masonry for Warrior Code and Ceremonial Burial.

Turn 20) 3000 BC: I move a warrior into Zulu territory, and make contact with Shaka. We trade Masonry for Pottery.

The warrior in Zululand will probably be asked to leave next turn. Not a problem - I just moved him there to make contact.

Here is the save:
http://www.civfanatics.net/uploads/c3-Persia-3000bc.zip

(note, I mispelled"ct3-" as "c3" on the file name - you should normally call it "ct3-whatever" It took me a while to find the mistake, because I would have sworn I named it "ct3..." :) )

Here is a map of our environs, with suggested city sites overlaid:
ct3-Persia-3000bc.jpg

I'll discuss this dotmap tomorrow. It's getting too late for me here, tonight. :)

Based on the map Padma provided it would seem that the priority was to send this first settler north. Wouldn't it be better to send the first settler out to the gems so we claim that and get started on some sort of border so we can backfill the northern lands before the Zulus and Babs can sneak them through?

Bob, you're right. My first inclination, when I started the road, was to build the next city to the north. After I saw what the rest of our neighborhood looked like, I would think either the pink dot (spices) or the green dot (gems) would make a better site for city #2, for reasons much as you described.

In my mind, the pink dot should come first. Yes, it is butted up against a lot of jungle, so would be slow growing, at first (but the NW side is forest, not jungle - not so bad). My reasoniong here is that it would prevent the Zulu from getting the spice, and yet not be too far from our capital.

The green dot, to me, seems like a bit of a stretch for our next city. Just a bit too far away. (Okay, I'm used to the aggressive AI on higher levels. :) ) But trying for it for city #3 would be fine for me.

The three dots to the north can wait for a little bit, but don't let the AI sneak settler through up there! Probably the lowest priority site is the white dot, as it is predominantly desert, so cannot grow well early at all. But it DOES have two whales in its radius, and later in the game could become a productive city.

In any case, part of a Succession Game is to let other people take your position, and do what THEY see fit. :D

Since Chieftess isn't on right now, I will do a quick critique of my own moves. (CT - you're welcome to do a critique as well - sometimes we don't always see our own :smoke: )

1st :smoke: - I waited until my science advisor asked me what I wanted to research. Like I said in my writeup, Chieftain is fairly forgiving, so it probably won't make any significant difference in the long run. But the best action is, once you found your first city, press the F6 key and tell your science advisor what you want to research. You gain a whole turn of research that way.

2nd :smoke: - Building that road north. Again, Chieftain is pretty forgiving, so it probably won't make too much difference. But on a higher level I would have kept that worker near Persepolis and done some more local improving.

Possible :smoke: - turning science research down to next to nothing. My personal playing style (on higher levels) is to turn down research spending in the Ancient Age and trade for most of the techs. It allows us to build up gold reserves for later, and on the higher levels you can't keep up with the AI on research, anyway. On Chieftain, we could probably build up a tech lead even in the Ancient Age, if we so desire.
