Hi

I installed the fall from heaven mod today. And it doesn't work.

I installed:
FallFromHeaven2032.exe
FfH2032i.exe
FfH2032media.exe

The game crashes while loading a new game. It could also be that it chrashes just when it finished loading.

My CivIV:BtS install claims its version 3.17, plus I've got it via Steam so it should be up-to-date. Civilization IV:BtS itself runs just fine. And the FfH:Age of Ice wich came with it also works. Plus i'm running vista. And i checked the integrity of my CivIV:BtS installation using steam.

So far i've tried to run to run it as admin, but that doesn't help at all.

Recap:
Chrashes while loading new game/at start 1st turn
I am running CivIV:BtS version 3.17 using Steam on a Vista pc.
CivIV:BtS runs just fine by itself, so does the Fall from Heaven scenario that came with it.
Checked the integrity of the game using steam.
Ran the game as admin, didn't work.

So could anybody help me solve this problem?

Thanks in advance,

Wieke

EDIT: I altered the title because the description was no longer valid.

From the main meun go into Advanced -> About this Build. What Civ version does it show?

The version I was referring to in my previous post is the "Civ Version" which showed as 317. But since 3.17 is the most recent version, and I am using steam i assumed it meant 3.17.

But anyway, this is wat "About this Build" shows:

Civ Version: 317
Save Version: 301
Build Version: 3.1.3.1 (104717)
Built Date: Mon May 19 15:20:10 2008
Build: FINAL RELEASE
Mod Name: None (when FfH2 is loaded it shows: Mods\Fall from Heaven 2 032\)

Check the info when FfH is loaded. As strange as it sounds we've had others report that when they load the mod the civ version is 3.13 but when they play vanilla bts the version is 3.17.

I checked but when FfH2 is loaded the "About this Build" window is exactly the same (apart from the mod loaded entry ofcourse).

Anyway I'll be more specific about the chrash, maybe it will help:
1. Start BtS
2. Load FfH
3. Single Player -> Play Now! (archipello, random, random, standard size, archipello, random leader, epic & warlord)
4. Loading screen says Initializing (with a bit of the bar colored green)
5. Loading screen says Initializing Graphics (extra bit of bar becomes green)
6. After a moment of Initializing Graphics the game crashes to desktop. (I suspect it finished initializing graphics)

Maybe it has to do with directx10 even if CivIV:BtS functions normally. Will try to install DX9. I read on the forum DX10 could cause trouble, but ruled it out because CivIV:BtS ran fine.

EDIT: Tried to install DX9, but it couldn't install. Perhaps not unexpected since i am running vista.

EDIT2: Some poking around on the internet i found out that dx9 is supposed to be already present on vista (but it's called Directx 9 EX). Plus vista isn't listed on DX9's list of supported OSs. (no surprise there)

So what should i try next?

I'm getting the same thing. Just got a new dell running XP, loaded the 3 civ games, patched the civ games, loaded FFH in the order they're listed on the other page...

Mod: Fall from Heaven II 0.32
Patch: Patch "j"
Media Pack: FfH2 0.32 media pack

and it crashes on the start of turn 1 every time. I tried disabling the intro video and it still crashed. I checked versions via the readme files and they're correct.

Game runs fine on my old PC. Plain old civ runs fine on the new one.

Just to be thorough i checked in BtS wich initialization step comes after graphics, it's Setup Map. So either it chrashes during initializing graphics or during Setup Map.

I tried to diable the intro movie by renaming intro.bik. But it still chrashes, so i undid the changes made to intro.bik.

So i install the new patch (version j) but it still chrashes. Bah.

Recap:
Chrashes while initializing graphics/setup map
I am running CivIV:BtS version 3.17 using Steam on a Vista pc.
CivIV:BtS runs just fine by itself, so does the Fall from Heaven scenario that came with it.
Checked the integrity of the game using steam.
Ran the game as admin.
Disabled the intro movie.
Updated to patch version J.

I am having this exact same problem. Crash to desktop on a vista machine with a steam copy of BTS 3.17 and FFH updated to patch j.

The game crashes to the desktop when trying to initialize graphics during the game setup after choosing who to play as.

I searched the BtS folders for logs that might contain some extra info. But it appears no logs were made from the games's initialization. Tried to enter debug mode in order to get some info on why it crashes, but debug is only availeble in a game (not in the main menu).

Figuring it might have something to do with the graphics (because it crashes during its initialization) I tried to run it with as much of the graphics disabled.
Graphics level on low, in fullscreen mode, 1024x768, no combat zoom, no enemy glow, animations frozen, effects disabled, globe view buildings disabled, low resolution textures, no movies. But it still crashes. :(

EDIT:

Should have thought of this earlier, here's the problem signature windows shows when the game crashes.

Problem signature:

It appears msvcr71.dll is either broken or being used wrong. According to processlibrary.com: "msvcr71.dll is a module containing standard C library functions such as printf, memcpy, and cos. It is a part of the Microsoft C Runtime Library." The most recent version of this file is present on my computer.

I re-installed 3.17 (even though the game said it was 3.17 and check for updates said none were available) and now it works.

Yes, I had this problem and found that reinstalling 3.17 after installing FFH2 (even though it said 3.17 was already installed) fixed the issues.
