Cumulative History Quiz

As for SunTzu's question.

I've never come across a reference to this. But if were to guess: Cold Harbor (June 3, 1864), where Grant lost 7,000 in one hour. It is about the only action in which Grant admitted to making a "mistake."

But it Alciabates's turn to ask ...

Another guess at Sun's...The wilderness?

For my Question...Let's get napoleonic:

The Hospitallers and it was in 1523 not 1522.
I do believe the individual leader is Philippe Villiers de
L'Isle-Adam

Same period:

Who offered the Knights(The Hospitallers) Malta ? And how long did they stay in Malta? Beginning to end.

H.R. Emperorer Charles V offered the Knights of St. John Malta (c. 1530); the Hospitalers successfully defended against Suleiman in 1565.

The island fell to Napoleon in 1798 (at the start of his Egyptian Campaign.) Failure of the French to evacuate Malta led to the breakdown of the Peace of Amiens (1803) with the British; and the British captured the island, I think, in early 1806, which they then controlled until after WWII.

If this be correct, a change pace question:
Which treasurer/exchequer of England was responsible for introducing the "ribbing" on the sides of coins (e.g., U.S. quarter) as a prevention against "skimming" the coins to make counterfeit new coins?

(I've missed taking part in this history quiz.)

Answer: This was Charles Montague, in collaboration with none other than Isaac Newton (who was knighted as a result of his work at the Mint). The technique was/is called "milling" rather than ribbing.

Question: He was the son of a Pomeranian duke. He was the great-nephew of a Danish queen. He was king of three countries. Who was he?

it must be erik av pommern, i don´t know his name in english.

Perhaps for everyone else you could perhaps mention who his father was, who his great aunt was, what the three countries were, and when it all happened.
