Excellent, Loaf Warden.

These two men, for the same background as Temujin himself, had a better grasp of the concepts of fire and movement than many more modern and more famous men. I yeild the floor to you for the next question.

Henry the IV of France. What he meant was, that he would appease the people of Paris by abstaining from Protestantism, so as to undermine Catholic League support from Spain during the War of the three Henrys, circa 1593. The peolpe of Paris were quite happy by this, and supported his war to rid France of Spanish influence. Earlier in the quiz, there was a question about the three most important invasions of Russia. The Answer for that is Germany, 1941, Napoleon, 1812, and the missing one is Gustafus Adolphus of Sweden. I guess I'm up again. Who was the first man to circumnavigate the Earth? (It isn't Magellan, despite popular belief

Oh man.....I knew that about Henry IV. <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/cry.gif" border=0> <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/cry.gif" border=0> <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/cry.gif" border=0>

Ayway <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/goodwork.gif" border=0> Alcibiaties!

About the the first man to circumnavigate the Earth of course it was not Magellan. Magellan died in South-East Asia.
The only ship that reached spain, thus terminating the voyage, was that of the Spanish (Basque) navigator Juan Sebastian de Elcano (del Cano).
To be more precise Del Cano was not the FIRST ONE. There were 17 men on the "Victoria". 13 Europeans and 4 indigenes. THESE were the first people to Circumnavigate the globe.
>>>Notice the 4 aboriginals it's pretty interesting.

Very good, Az.

One thing though, His name is El Cano. One of my comrades from Spain, Jesus Balsinde, told me that Del Cano is an incorrect translation. Also, he was the only one on 'Victoria' who knew how to navigate, so without him, the other members of the ship would never had made it back to Spain. At any rate, you are up, my friend!

Ok you're right they wouldn't have made it without him but they were still with him at the end so they count also.

ok next question......

Constantine I of Greece was King since 1911.
He is also called another "number". (Constantine ?how much?)
Which number is that and why do some historians attribute it to him?

Constantine the XII, and he was called as such to establish a blood link to the Byzantines. He was related to the Kaiser, BTW. I'm up again, so let's see....In what battle did Napoleon the First earn the nickname "The little Corporal", and why was he called that?

You're riht on the main answer.
BUT you didn't get the bonus points!
Constantine I wasn't related to the Kaiser but his wife the Queen Sofia was.

About your question

It was the battle of Lodi in which he earned the confidence and loyalty of his men, who nicknamed him "The Little Corporal" in recognition of his personal courage. It was fought at the Lodi Bridge.

As you say, close enough! He got the name not just for courage, but because during the battle, he started siting for some of his artillery, a job normally done by a corporal! Your up again, Az!

Alright.

Let's stay on the Napoleonic period..........

Question: Under Napoleon I which name was given to the heir to the throne?
I don't mean what title but what name.

FI: The heir to the throne of France was always called the "dauphin" .

So how was the heir called?

Clue: There are two names

Sorry if I'm not making my point clear enough.

Napoleon II's official title was the "King of Rome." He was also called "l'Aiglon." After the fall of Napoleon, was named the Duke of Reichstadt.

If this answer be correct:
A dominant school of history in the 20th century has been that of the French Annales historians. Who founded the Annales d'histoire economique et sociale from whence this group of historians have had their name derived.

oops.

I'm sorry but you fell into the trap! <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/wink.gif" border=0>

King of Rome, was not what I was looking for.
But l'Aiglon (which means the little eagle) is wrong.
The heir to the throne was called the imperial prince at that time.

L'Aiglon is first seen in a 1953 poem of Victor-Hugo. Never did Napoleon use such a name.
During the Second Empire and because Victor-Hugo was an ennemy of Napoleon III the - beautiful - name l'aiglon was never attributed to the heir. Napoleon III son was also the Imperial Prince (le Prince Imperial)

what do we do now?

Well since I see that the other Cum. Quiz was closed and there are no new questions on this one I'll ask one.

Who was the first "King of the French" and who was the only "King of Greece"?

Damned Az, you make you these questions tough:

"King of the French": I'd have to guess Louis Phillippe of the "July Monarchy."

"King of Greece": gotta a be an even trickier question; King of Greece v. King of the Hellenic Republic (?); since Alexander I, Constantine I, and George II were kings of the same "regime"; I'm gonna guess George I.

You're right about Louis Phillipe

Otto I was the first the only King of Greece (1840s)
George I was the founder of the Greek Royal House. All his descendents were Kings of the Hellenes (not Kings of the Hellenic republic

Otto I was an absolute monarch unlike the others.

Anyway unless someone has a really nice question to ask you're up Andu
