Das Kaisertum Österreich

FlagoftheAustrianEmpire.png
Hi. Today, I'm going to start writing a story about a Civ5 game.
That's horrid! Disgusting! Hideous! AAAH!
Let's try that again.
Good evening, misters and mistresses. On this fine day, I will tell to you a tale of despair, power, war, and famine, but also growth, development, cooperation, and peace. It is a tale of a land of beauty, with lush forests, colossal mountains, shimmering oceans, and sparkling seas. Today, my friends, I will tell you the tale of the most magnificent land of Austria.
That's better.

In this story, I have activated three mods, Events and Decisions, Unique Cultural Influence, and Civ Names By Policies. It is Singleplayer as Maria Theresa of Austria. The map type is Continents, the size Huge, difficulty Prince, and game pace Quick. Policy saving and all victories besides time are enabled.

I'm a screenieholic.

Birth of Civilization

Prologue:
In the dawn of civilization, there existed a people. They resided in the hills and valleys of a land called Österreich, and they were the Österreichers. They were a loosely united group of tribes, wandering through the land, searching for elephants of mammoth size and vegetation that would feed the mouths of the tribes. The original Österreichers migrated into the land of Österreich many millennium before, still using the hunting-gathering system that had been practiced from the first men and women of the earth. Then, as agriculture spread through the globe, towns and villages were created, and soon, nations of great prosperity and power. One of these pioneering peoples were the Österreichers, in 4000 B.C. The tribes had slowly merged on the foothills of Mount Felsig to create a town called Vienna. In a hut, located on the outskirts of the settlement, there was a man and a woman. The woman, known as Gründung Mutter, held a baby girl, who had recently been born. This girl came to be known as Maria Theresa, a powerful figure in the coming days. In adulthood, she forcibly overthrew the men who ruled the village with iron fists. She became the Eldress of the Austrian Tribe. Queen, in other words. She ruled the tribe as an intelligent eldress, and started a long line of women, known as the Theresa Dynasty.

In the first years of Maria Theresa's rule, it was rather quiet. The known world to the newly called Austrians was simply the village and surrounding area. All dilemmas sprung from the people within the settlement, none of it from other peoples. The Austrians lived in somewhat harmony.

Under the guidance of Maria Theresa, a unit of civilians were trained to create large farms so that the area around Vienna could be cultivated. People in the village had begun to use pots that were made from clay baked in a small fire for a little while to store wheat. Maria had instructed her shamans to find a way to make them sturdier and harder.

Soon, a group of men had gathered to petition to the Eldress of Austria. They had become restless, and wished to explore the lands near Vienna.

"Oh Beautiful Mistress, by the gods will, please let us traverse the lands of Austria. Let us discover what lies hidden in the lands of the north, south, east and west!" a man pleaded.

"Very well. You may explore the lands nearby, Go with my blessing, men of Austria." Maria Theresa submitted to their pleas. She knew the people of Austria could not reside in the foothills for eternity. The population was on the rise, and the settlement had already become a town. The warriors had departed from Vienna and started their journey northwards. The land of the north was lush with vegetation. Forests and grapes were plentiful, along with a deer. They followed the river Vien, the namesake of the settlement, and soon arrived at a sight of beauty. An endless expanse of water, and beaches stretching on and on. The water had too much salt to be drunken. Many a fish swam the endless sea. A cold and barren land sat in the west and east, giving little value to a possible site for a new settlement, but access to fish, grapes, and wheat seemed promising.

The warriors eventually left the seaside and continued their journey, this time turning to the west. They walked through forests and plains until they came upon a river and a group of abandoned buildings walled in. They named the river Andere, and the abandoned fortress Anderesa. They believed it was a failed agricultural civilization, and that they were relatives of the Austrians. They started to ford across the river and into the ruins.

Spoiler :

As they had thought, the ruins contained a remainder of wealth in them. Seventy golden coins were located. These funds would aid a project of great difficulty in the coming days(hint hint.)

Spoiler :

They resumed their exploration, southbound this time. Again, they spotted a group of ruins, but adjacent to a mountain and in a sand dune this time. They judged by the similar ruins that they were another Anderesan settlement. They started to walk to the ruins.

Spoiler :

In this old village, they found bronze spears and armor. They equipped this, making the unit stronger. This also revealed to them the amount of hills in the south. The dunes were very plentiful.

Spoiler :

They soon found another Anderesan settlement, ruined by time and weather. It was further down the river, in the middle of the dunes they called the Sandigens. Encouraged by their previous findings in Anderesan settlements, they started traveling towards them.

Spoiler :

This settlement had apparently more recently been destroyed, as people still resided in them. In reality, they had been lost in them for quite some time, and couldn't find their way out of the city, which was astonishingly larger than the other settlements. The spearmen assumed it was the capital of the old Anderesan people. The warriors led the people out, and pointed them in the direction of Vienna, telling them of the great prosperity of the village.

Spoiler :

As the unit resumed their mission once more, they detected another group of people in the east. They were armed, and looked rather fierce. As the spearmen observed the people, they named them 'barbarians', the word coming from their language, which sounded much like 'bar bar'. They appeared to be hostile, and the spearmen avoided them.

The Austrians are the happiest people on earth. Thanks Pliny.

Soon, Maria Theresa enacted reforms in the tribe, adopting a system called Überlieferung. They focused on promotion of royalty and dynasties.

Again, they found a possible Anderesan settlement.

Spoiler :

Inside the ruins, they found weird curved sticks with strings in the back, and shorter pointed sticks with feathers in the backs. One of the spearmen decided to pick up one and put one of the shorter sticks in the back, and the stick flew with great force. This was found to be useful in warfare, as the barbarians had spotted them and were attacking in small regiments, but bound to use full force soon.

Back in Vienna, Maria Theresa had begun to construct a massive library to hold the many books that the people of Austria had created. This project would take many years. The workers had created farms in the north, aiding the growth of the city. The shamans had already created pottery and invented a writing system. They were now working on a way to exploit the hills.

Okay, this is way too many screenshots. From now on, I'll limit each post to 15 and only five more here.

The warriors spotted a group of people in the south, armed, but friendly. They sent one of their soldiers to greet the spearmen. They spoke in a strange language and looked very different from the Austrians. From what the spearmen heard, they were the Coe-Ree-Hans.

The shamans had slowly developed a religion based on the desert dunes that the Austrians planned to settle.

Ok, six more.
The gap between the mountains was named Theresa Pass, and the historic defense of Theresa Pass stopped the barbaric hordes from crossing into Vienna to pillage and burn, and possibly destroy the grand library which was in the final phase of construction.

Spoiler :

Final one! I promise!
Finally. After many, many years stacking stone on stone, brick on brick, scroll on shelf, it was finished. The Grand Library of Vienna was finished. It was an enormous building, containing an enormous amount of books. Vienna was a center of learning. The Coe-Ree-Hans flocked to the Great Library to read some of the many scrolls, and all were allowed in, except criminals and dirty people. The Grand Library of Vienna was truly the grandest, greatest, most magnificent structure on earth. What're you gonna say now, Pliny?

Spoiler :

I kinda did a lot of screenshots. I didn't realize how many. In the future, I'll do at most 15, at least 5. Please give me feedback about this first chapter!

Looks very awesome so far! I am really excited to see a new story around these parts.

A story has emerged on these forums? That's not supposed to happen...
Actually, keep up the good work!

Lesson of the Day: Austrians are too civilized to build wonders such as 'Stonehenge'.

Age of Wonders

Prologue:
Following the completion of the Great Library, an era called the Age of Wonders proceeded. On the day before the completion, the Theresa line came to an end. It was a line of monarchs never seen before. Nearly sixty Theresa eldresses ruled from the beginning of agriculture to the completion of a magnificent library that was destined to be a marvel of the future. The last Theresa, Ursula Theresa IV, perished at an early age, heirless. She was an only child, causing a crisis upon the people. Some supported her aunt, others supported the aunt's elder brother. Some even wished for Ursula's grandmother(who resigned) to come back to power. Soon, the aunt took power, and began what was known as the Evelyn line, after the aunt's first name. It lasted for five generations, when the last remaining Evelyn was murdered. This caused the people to abandon the Theresa House, putting a new dynasty in power, a noble house named Etwas coming to power.

The Great Library aided the spread of knowledge throughout Austria. It caused for a cultural boom, as drama, poetry, books, and art appeared. Famous plays were created during this time, such as 'The Schnitzel Crisis' and 'Lederhosen Tales'(sorry).

Spoiler :

The Age of Wonders and the Great Library both helped begin a new time of art, writing, and beauty. It is commonly called the Classical. Many brilliant inventions were created during this age, the same with plays, poems, and philosophies.

The World to the Austrians:

Spoiler :

A hundred years or so into the Age of Wonders, an Etwas commissioned the construction of a building in the similar style of the Great Library, but functioning as a temple to the gods. It was to honor Avatermas, the goddess of the hunt and moon. The Etwas eldress commanded it to be built far out into the fields of Austria for some reason. It was built upon a pillaged field, destroyed by the barbarians. The temple would be tremendous. It would seem like it reached to the heavens.

At least we're not starving.

Spoiler :

The barbarians, having already destroyed many of fields of the Austrian countryside, decided to finally burn the final fields, leaving the people of Vienna hungry. Food still came in from other sources, such as hunting and gathering, but the people of Vienna saw their stockpiles diminishing.

Spoiler :
ge4Ceq2.png

As the people of Austria began looking for food in the countryside, they came upon other people. When they spotted the Austrian people, they were frightened and ran away, presumably to their homes or possibly the settlement they originally came from, to inform their superiors. The Austrians hunters, who had followed a herd of elephants for quite some time, returned home to inform the Etwas eldress. She was curious of the people, so she commanded the spearmen to head eastward, where the hunters spotted them.

Spoiler :

The spearmen arrived on the outskirts of the territory farmed by the strangers. A farmer saw them and informed the local guard, which eventually reached the government of the area. They were called the Mombasans, of Mombasa. A maritime state, they had heard of the wonders of Vienna and were in awe of the Austrians, and so they gave them money, a gift to aid the relations between Austria and Mombasa.

Spoiler :

Back in the city of Vienna, the Temple of Avatermas was completed. A spectacular sight, with hundreds of columns of stone on the outside, and a roof of brick. A beautiful garden on the outside made it even more so. The Temple of Avatermas was a truly sight worth seeing.

Spoiler :

Soon, news came from the south. In the Coe-Ree-Han capital of Soul, a massive structure of stones was constructed by their king. It was stone upon stone, and was said to be built upon the birthplace of a primitive deity of theirs. The desert god of Uschaunt was far more complex then the warlike and bloody gods of the Coe-Ree-Hans. Uschaunt was a deity born from the union between stone and water, and was abandoned in the unforgiving deserts of the west.

Back to the Coe-Ree-Han structure. It gave their people faith in their gods, as the structure symbolized the Coe-Ree-Han capability and prosperity. They thought the gods favored their people. How wrong they are. Two massive structures far more complex and ornate than the stones stacked upon stones were built by the Austrian people. The Coe-Ree-Hans are merely gifted. The Austrians are empowered by the great heavens above in every way possible. The Austrians are far greater than the foolish uncivilized southerners.(Don't take it the wrong way, Korean people. I'm in RP mode as a biased Austrian narrator.)

And also, a new form of government was created. Instead of a simple tribe, a new chiefdom was created, with more complicated government. There were advisers, a more organized hereditary system, and more laws.

Spoiler :
vyctibM.png

Another wonder began construction. It seemed that the Austrians were obsessed with creating tremendous buildings, to honor their gods, to please the people, and to strike the world with awe. The new building would be called the 'Parthenon'. It would honor Uschaunt, the desert deity, and others.

Spoiler :

Many years later, a list was released by Goethe, a man from Austria. He was not biased when he released his list. Not at all. Goethe was a wise man, who treated all nations as equal. Totally.

The Austrians are too intelligent to sit around and do nothing. They are the busiest people by far.

Spoiler :

Vienna was celebrating. The Parthenon was on the eve of completion. Workers rejoiced at the nearly finished structure. The Parthenon was smaller than the Temple of Avatermas, but more intricate, and dedicated to all the gods. The wonder would attract people from far and wide.

Spoiler :
HEAZ4Bj.png

At last. The magnificent structure was done. Ornate statues surrounded the Parthenon, and carvings of high complexity were covering the building. Columns of great height, like the Temple of Avatermas, surrounded the interior building. Inside, marble floors, elegant statues, and more carvings were everywhere. This truly was the most beautiful place on Earth.

Spoiler :

Finished! Expect another wonder next time. I'm truly addicted to them.
