Dawn of Civilization General Discussion

I finally completed the first two UHVs of Sweden (cultural coverage throughout the Baltic Sea is very painful), but I am confused about the third UHV. What should I do to make my approval rating the highest among all countries?

From The inner workings of the Demo screen explained:
Approval Rate- Is the percentage of happy faces your cities generate divided by the total number of happy and unhappy faces produ:ced. The formula is happy / happy + unhappy. At the beginning of the game when there are no happy or unhappy faces the game defaults to a rating is 50%. You can see the total of unhappy and happy faces for each city in the f1 screen.

@Dracosolon already covered the "How" part.

If I remember correctly life expectancy follows the same formula for :health:, which can lead to some funky numbers in the modern era.

I always thought there was something darkly funny in how, from the Civ IV player's point of view, extra :) and :health: are basically suboptimal. Gotta have your subjects just happy enough that they don't stop working, and if things are good it's time to pump out more population until more  and :yuck: are generated and life goes back to being merely tolerable.

Will there ever be a definitive edition of Dawn of Civilization?

I mean, one where there are no more updates because everything that was ever intended has been implemented into the mod.

It is likely that at one point there won't be any more updates to the mod. It is less likely that this version will include everything that has ever been intended for the mod.

I have no idea if this final version will ever be designated and announced as such.

By the way, in recent days I have shifted my focus to working on the city name map. This is quite the huge effort and might take some time. As of now, I need to sort through suggestions from different sources and collect them into a format I can work with.

I know I put the playthrough requests on indefinite hold for this. I had less time in recent months to get to it, and the playthrough being there kind of wedged itself into my creative progress so that I could not work on anything substantive before getting to it. There is definitely still balancing work to do, but to overcome the block I decided to shift to city names now that I should have more time for it.

Balance feedback is still welcome, I will keep note of it and address when there is a good opportunity. Of course I will also keep addressing bug reports in regular intervals. But don't expect anything big to happen while the city names effort is underway.

Wait, does it mean no more Linz, Sens, Laval or Wittenberg ?
(Idk if Toledo was on purpose, I think it would be cool for Spain to spawn with Toledo)

They all will be renamed to Königsberg.

You can have the city in any color, as long as its Königsberg.

Or Venezia.

In the end, I completed Sweden's UHV3 in 1931.
To be honest, Sweden's UP seems to have little relevance to UHV (the only great people that may have an impact on approval ratings is +1 happiness of settled great artists).
The civic in which I ultimately won was monarchy (garrisons generate happiness for up to half of the city's population)/caste system (accelerates the production of some happy buildings)/theocracy (state religion city +2 happiness, which is equivalent to a St. Thomas Church)/fanaticism (eliminates non state religion, although syncretism may be better, but it will have negative effects when combined with theocracy)/nationhood (providing additional happiness for some buildings). Contrary to expectations, public welfare actually has very little effect for approval rating(only reducing some dissatisfaction with company operations)
Nevertheless, I doubt whether these civic systems, apart from monarchy and public welfare, truly align with the historical reality of Sweden

Very useful feedback, and impressive that you've already gone through the UHVs. Most of what you said make sense to me (though I dread the discussions over Canada's UU ;)). However I'm not sure what you mean by this? UHVs shouldn't scale?

I have one last thing on balance, and a possible hot take: we know higher speeds are already not as balanced, and that the scaling is sometimes inconsistent -- why not just remove that element from the UHVs and accept it will just be imbalanced and easier? Anyone playing a higher speeds can know they are on a wonkier and easier mode, and I don't think it would cause any outcry from any portion of the player base.

If you run theocratic, you can train missionaries without monastery requirements, but perhaps reforming for this in the later game is not worth it
