Deathmatch PBEM

Hmm. Well, please don't think of this as a flame, but rather a defending of a rather fine scenario...

This was never going to be a 'normal' civ game, it is what is says, a 'Deathmatch'. As such it is guns blazing from turn 1.

There were/are many options available to everyone:

- Make friends with your immediate neighbour, avoiding a costly initial conflict.
- Kill you immediate neighbour immediately, thereby getting more land
- Make very quick alliances around the world to kill the strongest.
- Pick on the weakest
- Stay out of the fighting if not directly attacked, thereby building an army ready for instnt retaliation
- Betray your alliances to gain quick territory
- Build marines and invade all those undefended costal cities
- blah blah blah....

You have obviously never played Diplomacy or (to a lesser extent) RISK. The idea is to form alliances, they are quickly changing and you must watch your back...

C'mon guys! What did you expect!

I missed getting in to this game as I didn't check the thread in the 24 hours in which it was open. I suggest you offer your place to someone who wants to play, and maybe you will think twice about joining a scenario PBEM in the future...

When someone becomes too large they just crush the little people one by one. :)
I don't know. You can't get higher in technology. If all the smaller Civs ally quickly enough, I don't think the bigger will be able to resist.

It more a question of: will the alliance continue till the former big one is completely destroyed, or will the allies see more danger/gain somewhere else?

Anarres sees the fun of this precisely. ;) Perhaps if CivAddict2002 doesn't care, you could take over a completely nuked Civ. :p But the choice is CivAddict2002's.

Anarres, I didn't take it as a flame, and I'm glad we are not turning this into a flame war. I have played Risk, many many games. I never did play diplomacy though. In Risk, yes there were a few strategies but a lot of it wasn't, especially in 1v1 or 1v1v1 games. You just pile all your units on a few squares and keep attacking until you have conquered as much as you can. Then the next person has fewer armies and can do less. The next turn you have an even larger army, rinse and repeat. And when you turn in Risk cards later in the game for 15 or 20 units...steamroll time. It's even worse when you play the computer version of Risk. That's why I stopped playing Risk and started playing Axis and Allies, and eventually the expansion pack to Axis and Allies called The World at War 1939-1945 by Xeno Games. Those games take a lot of strategy and not so much luck. I just don't find much enjoyment playing games based solely on luck unless I'm playing with my kids, then we play Candyland or Chutes and Ladders.

What did I think I was getting into when I joined this deathmatch game? My answer is I don't know. I guess I was thinking I could actually play a game where I didn't hit space bar everytime I got the save for at least 10 turns, and then not see the game anymore because someone refuses to check their e-mail. I wanted to play Civ3, but this doesn't feel like it.

I'm not trashing the scenario. I now everybody's tastes are different. I was just posting my thoughts on the subject in hopes of maybe making the scenario better. I have talked to someone who is playing another deathmatch game and for some reason they can't build nukes. He said he's going to have to use a different strategy in order to win. I'm not saying no nukes is the way to go, but it might be.

Matrix, I know the game is far from over. The game will probably swing to having many different people on top. If I win this game, I'm not going to go back on my opinion and say this was the best game I have ever played.

I have been playing this scenario with someone else and just to tell everyone, once a lot of nukes and ICBM's get launched (not that i have any ;)) the game will get very.....ummm.....er.......tedious. If a lot of your cities are nuked and you only see the game every other day, you may not see a point at continuing.

Noted, Unregister.

CivAddict2002, I think the biggest difference in opinions is that I think there's less luck involved than you think. But alas.

CivAddict2002, do you want anarres to take over?
Anarres, do you want to take over from CivAddict2002?

Matrix, I'm going to keep playing. I have a theory I want to test out. You could be right about our opinions. Like I said, this wasn't meant to be a whine, just an observation. My intent was to see if anybody else shared my opinion so we could possibly make the scenario better. But if nobody shares my opinion and everybody thinks the scenario is fine the way it is, then obviously I'm in the minority. I know sometimes when you first start something you don't enjoy it because you see only one solution. But then later you see that there are many different ways and you may start to like it (like getting my kids to eat broccoli). Anyhow, I'm going to keep playing.

CivAddict2002, I am glad you are going to carry on. I hope you kick some ass :hammer:

Not about this deathmatch game, but in another one i am playing using the deathmatch scenario two odd things happened.

1) When it started nukes or ICBM's couldn't be built. But the next time it was played (continuing it from the day before) they could be built.

2) I took over a city with two Stealth Bombers in it, and the bombers became mine. I thought airplanes weren't capturable.

Where the heck is this game?

Last one I received was of feb. 10 at 9:19 AM GMT+1. (Figure it out.)

I haven't seen the save since Feb 8. I sent to DogBoy and he sent me confirmation that he got it, played it, and sent it.
