Defeated....but how?

So i was in this wonderfull game with 6 other civs on a normal map and doing very good as i was in first place and equal on tech with the nearest competitors.

When we arrived in the modern era the AI beat me to fission and was well underway in building their United Nations. Knowing i could lose very easiliy i didn't want it to come to an election. So i prepared my forces to take out the first target (the chinese) who were one of the two nations building the damn thing.

I made an RPP with the chinese and moved my forces against his cities thinking his infantry wouldn't be to big of a deal against my tanks (no sense in playing mr. nice guy at this stage, i normally don't backstab :D ).

Next turn comes around and i take all his cities in one turn with some severe losses (Dang those infantry in cities)

As i cleaned up the mess i was already shipping my forces towards bablyon for the next target. Problem here: They had MECH infantry. As i didn't have the goody goody modern tanks i was sure to lose so i just focussed on the city where the UN was being built. As the turnclock left me 1 turn i attacked with everything i had. I razed the city and thought i would be saved as i was well underway constructing my own UN.

Now the really weird thing. Babylon switched production to another city and within two turns he completed the UN anyway. Needless to say, i was served a humiliating defeat, but how did he manage it? I was sure there we're no other wonders that were under construction.

I'm going back now to see what he was building there in the first place.

Damn, i lost...

P.S. Is this the right forum for this?, seems to me there is some question that could relate to strategy and i don't wanna post this in The Bad Place (general forum)

I'm sorry, but I can't offer any clues about the AI's ability to pull that sort of miraculous stunt (irritating aren't they), but you may find something useful in the thread listed below.

It doesn't answer your question but does offer some other solutions to trying the military solution. According to the advice I was given on that thread the biggest "influencer" in voting is having Mutual Protection Pacts with as many civs as possible just before the vote.

It certainly worked for me. It wasn't even necessary to get the other candidate to declare war on me. I just got MPPs wherever I could (hang the cost if you're just about to win) and won the vote.

It's probably not the universal answer but it sure can help. Apologies if this is no help to you - but perhaps it will help someone else reading this thread.

Thanks,

I went back to the scene of humiliation ;)

Took both his producing cities this time, seems i was wrong on whether he was building anything else. He was building the Seti program so that's why he won anyway.

Then went on to play a bit further. The russians got the UN for i could but that was of no consequence since they were not a contender.

I then went on to build a spaceship and everyone declared war on me

Seems they hadn't forgotten my backstabbing and razing of some capitals heh. Anyway, just before i could launch the spaceship i quit the game.

No save/reload scores in my scorelist, the AI really got me this time.

Oh BTW: It seems the AI can't make a effective assault on you if you are on a island or continent. The most they could do was assault from transports and bombard my shores.

Good for you.:) I'm not that organised, so my score sheet is almost the exact opposite of yours. It's grossly skewed by running end-games that others have posted, re-running ones of my own to savour the victory, reviewing the little progress movie things, or testing out different possibilities, etc.

I did look at it once, sigh, and wonder if I should start it anew, but then I thought "Hell, it's a single player game and no one else in the world gives a damn about my scores - and I know what happened! :D

If you really want to have your high score list "clean" you can edit it. It's a file in the main Civ3 directory called "highscores" or something like that, I can't remember the extension. I'm at work, don't have the exact file name in front of me, but it's an obvious name. It's a very simple text file and easily editable. I, too, had some scores from "one turn to win" games I loaded from this forum and what not that I didn't want mucking up my scores, so I take them off the list after I "win" those games.

Thanks very much indeed for the tip eMarkM. I did think of posting that very question, so it's great to have the answer pop up unexpectedly. If nothing else, it's a great way to see how (or if) I'm actually progressing through the game.

I will certainly follow up on your tip, so I appreciate that you took the time to explain it. Not only is Civ3 an absorbing game, but some of the fans are helpful too - what more could you ask! :D :D
