Defence Term 2: In defence against Barbarians.

Somebody that believes in that sort of thing should sacrifice a goat or something to the RNG.
Come on. Everyone knows that the RNG only accepts dancing fruit. But scince the goverment refused my grant (see here) we dont have any of them. :shakehead

My personal oppinion is that we just keep popping. Who knows maybe we will pop writing followed by philospophy and beat dnuts to it... of course it is risky looking at our current history.

My opinion was in The next few turns... thread - specifically we should pop huts once we have Pottery safely in our possession. If we pop a tech, it will be Masonry. If we pop barbs, we are in some danger because our homeland is almost directly SE, but if our warrior survives the initial onslaught, he should be able to lead them NW away from trouble.

Chamnix: Is there a way to predict which techs will be popped next? I always assumed it was random, first from the current tier, then from the next tier.

Personally, my psy-psense tells me it'll be barbs, no matter how I voted. Therefore, precautions should be prepared... But, I still think it's worth popping by us, rather than KISS.

Also, I thought we already had pottery...? Or did we simply agree to the deal, and they have not yet sent it?

We just agreed to the deal. Should have it in our posession at the start of next turn.

You get the cheapest tech in terms of beaker cost that you don't already have (excluding the one you are currently researching).

Tech Summary
Pottery - 2,
Ceremonial Burial - 2,
Bronze Working - 3,
WarriorCode - 3,

Masonry - 4,
Mysticism - 4,
The Wheel - 4,
Alphabet - 5,

Horseback Riding - 5
Iron Working - 6,
Philosophy - 6,
Mathematics - 8
Writing - 8,
Code of Laws - 10, Literature - 10*, Map Making - 12,
Polytheism - 12, Currency - 16, Construction - 20, Monarchy - 24*, Republic - 28*.

Therefore to 'lead' the RNG Hand of Meleet :worship: ... for 'popped' tech choice ... we have the option of locking the research to either Masonry or Mysticism ... and therefore the other will be popped ...

Which should it be ??? ... I would like to be gifted Masonry ... as Chamnix has pointed out we may be able to get a SGL if we research Mysticism first ...

Yep - I agree that researching Mysticism and (hopefully) popping Masonry is the way to go. Also, just to clarify, the "cheapest" tech is determined by the actual game in addition to the editor - knowing someone with a given tech makes that tech cheaper, so, for example, right now (if we had all the cheaper techs), we would pop Writing before Mathematics because we know someone with Writing.

It is, of course, your decision.
But I would really like to hear your rationale for favoring exploration over deviating tp pop that hut at this moment in time.

Thanks!

We need to know the location of KISS first. That is the most important thing we need to be doing right now. Finding out where they are will help us to plan our defence better and make any attacks we plan better managed.

I agree - the sooner we find the KISS homeland the better.

Some Longer Term Strategy from the "Next Few Turns Thread" that needs to be discussed:
From Chamnix:
I guess part of the question of barracks vs. warrior comes down to our long-range military plans. Do we believe there will be war (with KISS or overseas) before the Middle Ages? If not, do we expect to fight with Medieval Infantry or Knights (or Cavalry eventually)?

If we expect early war, then we probably want veteran warriors to upgrade to swords and should build a barracks first. Same thing if we plan to fight with Medieval Infantry.

If our plan is to use mounted units, then a lot of our warriors will never be upgraded and will probably just be disbanded when we reach Republic (unit costs). In that case, we should just build regular warriors for now and make sure we have a barracks ready around the time we hook up horses so we can build veteran chariots or horsemen for upgrade.

My 2 Comments:
Ancient Age war? No.
I hope KISS will be trustworthy – they seem to be so far – and I'd be hesitant to get involved in an over-seas war with direct military action (unless it's a total mop-up job, and we can capture some free cities with very little work).

Main Medieval Unit: Knights/Cavalry.
To quote my hero and master civ player, Ision:
in Civ - Speed Kills.
And from Civ master Scoutsout:
Speed kills. Horsemen can attack cities from across the border at the beginning of a war, and the Horsemen's retreat ability helps keep losses lower. An advantage to using horsemen in ancient conquests is the upgrade path. A large number of horsemen upgraded to knights in the early middle ages can be a formidable force.
'nuff said.

Thoughts?

We need to get to the two sources that are to the east of us. That should be our main prioity right now. While it is best to have fast units, who says that swords are useless? They can be very effective attacking units. But defence needs us to get these resources now so that we can start to have an army that will do great in attacking other armies. The sooner we can lay claim to these resources the better.

This is really more of a question for the soon-to-be-coronated next defense minister because it will relate to next term (but since there is only one candidate I figure we can actually get a decision early) - what are your plans for the warrior about to come out of Heron? Will he be an explorer, or MP in Athens, or something else?

Re the next warrior from Heron, my first instinct is to consult with Domestic to explore the economic benefits of his assignment on MP duty...

Re Heron becoming a military powerhouse, I am in complete agreement. The only sticking point at the moment is when to build the barracks. I plan on exploring the consequences building it now, after the settler factory is running, or some other time.

The economic benefits are fairly straightforward - as an MP, the warrior will keep one citizen content. If he is not an MP, then it costs 1 gold per turn to keep that citizen content. We have to decide if we want to spend that 1 gpt to gain knowledge of the map or spend it on science.

I just realized - I should not have answered Chamnix's question regarding Heron's Warrior. That is for the current Defense Minister. The only question directed at me was regarding a barracks in Heron.

As for the Barracks... There have been persuasive argument pro as well as con, and some mornings I feel one way, and sometimes the other.

The biggest benefit is we can start producing Veteran Hoplites. I'm against Regular Hoplites. The only drawback is cost. 1 gpt. However, that cost will be outweighed by the soon-to-be explosive growth of our core.

Let's get the barracks going. Then we can start popping more goody huts, and possible engage a Golden Age.
