Defense Scenario

I'm trying to teach my kids Civ. Is there some way to pause the game or increase the timer on the Defense scenario while they are learning what to do?

There is an option in the game to turn the timer off (its in one of the option screens). You can just turn it off and let each turn take as long as you like. I don't know if it has been blocked in the scenario that you are playing but have a look.
