deity aw 4 will fully launch a bit later, since most of us are quite low on time right now. so play whenever you feel like (i already played the first sets, or better, played in 1 big set, but my start was a complete failure, so youl will find no big summary there from me in the aw 4 thread...)

@Dirk and Snaaty,

that was an awesome thread to read! Thanks for all the details and tactical discussions and for a great introduction into the art of civing. Reading this I am wondering if I am playing the same game :-) things seem so logical when you describe it and so hard to follow in my games.
So you played that over what, three months? Respect. That was more entertaining than watching a good tv series. I never thought stealing techs is so effective in the later game - why oh why was I building observatories in my games.

If I got it right, its basically (besides surviving and other minor issues )

1) get only enough cottages to keep your empire alive and tech to rifling (like two good cottage cities)
2) get the espionage buildlings, starting with the courthouses and run spies all the time
3) get either high promotions by settling or attaching GGs
4) spam units for attack waves
5) destroy roads after conquering to prevent AI retaliation

Dirk, one last question: did you whip factories/coalplants or build them?

Thanks.

PS: I am still astonished by your early expansion rate. Especially on pangea, I found the AI with immortal bonuses is way to fast for me if I am not expansive.

^Thx, i appreciate your comments. Indeed the game costed 3 months. I also saw i played this game in 212 hours. It'll be less because sometimes i don't exit the game when i stop playing. But it's been well over 100 hours i think.

1) Correct, Only capital is probably sufficient but use helper cities to grow the cottages near the capital.

2)Indeed you get your first gspy from GW or Snaaty's Oracle->Col->run spy mechanism. You farm the second with a courthouse. GW is better than Oracle in this respect.

3)Correct, i thought settling was the best way to go initially but i attached in the later game and these units helped a lot. I now think 1 city with 3GG settled in HE maybe one GG settled in Block city as you whip a lot of skirms there in the early game. But i also used 3 for military academies which helped a lot. Without GW you have to make choices here.

4) Yes

5) Essential after the AIs get RR. It's impossible to defend a 3-4 city front otherwise. Gunships rule here, before gunships you can bomb away the improvements with fighters and use spies or sac some obsolete units.

As for the factories i believe i whipped them but maybe not all of them. Whipped some plants but some could easily be built in high production cities.

As for the expansion, this was a pretty good start for a REX. And once you'll have your block city up the AIs are reluctant to settle more in the neighborhood.

One last remark, there are plenty of opportunities for espionage in normal games but it really shines in AW as keeping up in tech is more difficult and you don't suffer the diplo hits from espionage (or at least you don't care about them ).
