Deity: OCC Cultural Even Possible?

So I tried to snare my first ever Deity win last night. I went with Polynesia on Archipelago, with the standard 8 civs and 16 city states.

Everything went perfect. I had Incense and Marble in the capital. I had my own island to myself. I found 3 cultural CSes early.

And, even though I didn't even start it until turn 58 when it was just sitting there (figured I had no chance) I built the Great Library on turn 67.

I filled out Tradition and Piety in record time, then knocked out Freedom. I had 4 settled great artists giving 2x :c5culture: from Freedom, I had a ring of Moai circling my island.

I did numerous RAs and I did everything right. And I still was only done with 3 policy trees at around 1350 AD, with no reasonable means to increase my culture in any way until I get a late broadcast tower. This broadcast tower was a pipe dream because even though I built :c5science: buildings as soon as they were possibly available, I was still several very expensive techs short of even the Industrial Era.

I've done OCC culture wins before on previous patches and on Immortal. I like to think I know what I'm doing. I can't think of a way I could have improved. Is it even possible on a normal sized Deity game? Even with the Goldilocks scenario I had, I wasn't even that close.

Aren't you supposed to wait with tradition until last? Thought you only grabbed that one for free opera houses and a quick hermitage.

under occ going straight through tradition is a viable option.

occ is tough, but polynesia, archipelago with a decent starting island should be doable. i assume ruins were on and you nabbed a bunch?
you really want to maximize RAs so you can get to radio/mass media and pop out sydney opera house. occ, archipelago, polynesia is a setup where i can see opening up rationalism before completing freedom / piety paying off.

wasting the growth bonuses in an OCC until 'last' somewhat defeats the purpose.

Preferably you'll wait at least until philosophy before taking Legalism to at least get a free temple, but an early culture ruin can 'ruin' that approach.

*Facepalm*

This sounds like an interesting challenge, I think I'll try it as soon as I can.

I love OCC, and culture, just never tried it on Diety.

Maybe p-nesia isn't the way to go? I might try it with Siam, India, Greece, or maybe even Korea.

Siam (or Egypt) might be the best.

Not sure of the odds of getting them, but Oracle and Hanging Gardens would be the two big early wonders. (Later ones= Sistine, Christo, Sydney)

Getting RAs (and PT) would probably be vital.

With polynesia especially make sure you aren't sacrificing general development for culture. (Maois are good, but I would develop+work my non coastal tiles first.

General Development->science, production, gold to get the Wonders, Buildings, CS allies you need.

Has anyone ever done an OCC Conquest on Deity?

i'd go with polynesia on an archipelago any day. if you get the perfect map you can get each maoi being +5 or more, and the number of ruins you can get is crazy.

siam isn't great for deity occ as you're not going to be able to afford many city states anyway. i'd take arabia over them.

if its diety archipelago then the aztecs are the best shout, coupled with the right wonders. just have to defend against all the units that get thrown at you,

I give 100$ to the first guy doing this. Map must be at least small with at least 6 players including human.

I guarantee you that DaveMcW can do that with the Mongols within 24 hours. You might want to ban Keshiks (and probably Babylon) to have a $100-worthy achievement. Assuming those restrictions, Siam's Elephants are probably the way to get it done, although triple pillage would also help out a ton.

I'd suggest Cathy (if you don't mind rerolling) or Harun if you want to go for OCC Culture and you don't want to cheese the map in favor of Polynesia. Speed is ultimately going to be driven by your ability to afford allies and RAs.

Haha i forgot about Dave and his incredible capacity to rape everything with keshiks! Maybe this worths only 20$ after all.

If i really want to propose a cash contest i will make a new thread about this and talk about settings, bans and rules with potential contestants before lauching a game and will do vigorous inspections to keep cheating off most as possible(keep yourself ready, it may comes faster than you think, but i will talk to moderators for details...or at least if it's possible to do such thing). I like contests :)

No OCC culture. Domination only.

OCC Domination as Mongolia would be pretty tough if you don't have access to lots of horses. So it would be highly map dependent.

OCC deity culture win? What am I missing? How about just a standard game in the middle of a pangea type map? With a Civ that doesn't have a ranged early UU. So far I'm not seeing any wins. Unless someone has won deity chanllenge 4 but didn't report. I recognize that that game has a poor production capital. But there is a ton of gold involved.

Last night I tried occ Greece for culture win on difficulty 8. Greece was one of those civ that I hadn't beat the game with and occ was solely for achievement purpose. Deity, however struck me hard last night. I figured deity would be challengable but doable because my game went breeze in difficulty 6 as Rome domination. Yes I was aggrogant and full of myself.

Anyway, for the first hour I tried occ Greece in pangea then realized it's not impossible. I rushed stonehenge and got brute rushed by two different civ while making oracle. Another game I made a few defending units before rushing oracle then of course AI made it. In countless save/load I have learned occ culture win in deity is near impossible especially in Pangea.

So, I'm playing through occ Greece in archipelgo on difficulty 7. I'm trading with all civ to maintain friendly relationship and not taking anyone's side. I have stonehenge, oracle, and floating garden. After garden I took a little detour in tech tree to ensure himeji castle and that could have been a mistake because I was late for Sistine chaple. Other than that I believe I'm in good shape.

Realahbi try Korea. Go with the uber-tall TempleofArt/HG approach and use all of the GA/GS that spawn to make their tile improvements. With the huge population you get you should be able to keep up with science without signing RAs (and if not, the science boost from Patronage should do it). I wouldn't even worry about Stonehenge. I'd grab StatueofZeus as a next step if you can get it (probably not unless you get lucky enough to have marble...and even then getting both TofA and SofZ is gonna be tough on deity). Get NC as early as possible for the huge science boost and then beeline Archaeology. I wouldn't worry about Sistine Chapel to be honest, Hermitage is going to give you a much bigger culture boost, and using all available funds to get cultural CS (and the rest of them if you can manage it) will be the keys. Get all the cultural and science buildings you can, don't bother with military other than upgrading your defensive buildings and your primary defensive unit (later in the game get trebuchet/cannon/artillary in your capital). If your capital is coastal grab the strongest naval unit you can to stay in your city as well. It will help in defense.

If you do the tile improvements with all of your GA/GS you should have a pretty good shot at staying up on culture/science and being able to keep up with the big boys. Pray for good positioning and try to DoF as many civs as you can, bribe them to war with one another, and ignore little ole Korea.

I'm going to try this myself so...good luck!

Omg, last night I tried to do an OCC Culture Diety win with Egypt.

I think the problem was 22 civs, cause I couldn't get a single wonder, even after three initial autosave reloads.

Never played Diety before, incredibly hard!

I was going to set up an OCC game on a pangaea map in Deity Challenge 5, but now I have some of the DLC, so I'm not sure how to set up the game without DLC. Maybe someone else can post a starting save without DLC? I think it will be really difficult unless there is a lot of luck with the map, but it will be interesting to see how far people can get. I tried a couple of OCC deity games with Eqypt on a pangaea map and failed miserably each time.

Sounds interesting. Can you post your starting file so others can try as well? What DLC do you have besides Korea?

I started a deity/pangaea/small game tonight with Korea. Had to reroll a few times but I have my city on a riverside hill next to a mountain range. I have 2 wheat, 2 silver, and marble in my direct vicinity. I went through the first time going for marble first, built the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, then the Temple of Artemis, and I started building the Hanging Gardens but the AI beat me to it by like 6 turns. I was able to bribe 3 of the civs to DoW each other, with Russia being the dominant one (took America's capital before turn 50), and a few turns after I lost HG...Russia DoW me. I had nothing so I restarted.

I think I've got about the best start I could have, and I am just going to try and fine tune my start so I can get all three of the early wonders I want, and then go super science/culture the rest of the way. Wish me luck!
