Deity trashsystem game ...

@ ALL:

After I have quit in disgust yesterday night without saving after Sitting Bull stomped on me, I had a quick look at the autosaves this morning:

I might be able to go on from the earliest version, because there I still have the same religion as Sitting Bull (joined in, because the yellow guy demanded it and I was afraid to refuse). I went to no religion shortly after, and only about 5 turns later, Bull went after me.

If a replay is allowed from there, I might have a decent chance to survive by staying in Bull´s religion. My position is pretty strong…

There is one settler waiting near the silver, clam, horses, capital is growing, The Hague is producing troops to replace losses

Utrecht just finished the first GS who is heading towards capital, two barb cities captured, cutting down jungle right now

Some stats:

Workers 5 (don’t remember, but some more are planned to get to 8)
Axes 4 (lost about 3 or 4 by capturing the barb cities, more in production)
Cities 5
Settlers 1
GS 1
3 pretty good city sites in backland fully blocked (9 cities possible altogether)
GL was already build somewhere
Aest researched this turn, plan to research two turns into Alpha and trade for it (I know it works… …done it last time)

I played some shadow game and managed to found 9 cities (with place for one more - could be more but I was too late with my axes), so on the next map my strategy will change. Chopping axes makes sense - forests are burned, but conquered city has forests itself. There was time that my overall research was 2 beakers. Important thing is to get critical techs before maintanance strikes - Pottery, in this case IW etc.

Snaaty, I think if you do replay, that is perfectly acceptable! After all, we all want to learn. And the more participation this thread has (and thus the more strategic approaches we can discuss), the better!

With regard to your game:
- You already have a GS and five cities and quite a number of troops. I didn't dare to start producing a GS that early...
- Why do you build monuments? Since we are creative you wouldn't need it to improve the culture of your cities. (And didn't you advice against monuments yourself in sich a case - or am I mistaken here?) Or is it because there is nothing else you could build?

What kind of cities did you conquer? Barb cities? Or did you start an early war?
I think you are absolutely right with regard to getting all the important techs before you start REXing.

Barb city. Only one. It was placed in similar location to your own and blocked Sitting Bull in the last moment. Since only 2 set of votes came (plus my own set of votes), I wonder if this tiny competition makes longer any sense. I will make report from this game, maybe. Impressive was coordination of great scientist with researching Drama&Meditation, which gave me Taoism. After all, it's rather warmonger opening. Unit upkeep in my game counts 13. Perhaps I'll try my first pre-mace war.

Here is my 1AD save, played from 4000BC. Overall population exceded 40, which I am glad with.

I´m dead... ...no way to avoid it...

...

If I leave the religion of Sitting Bull, he will switch from pleased to cautious and will declare on me (happened in first try)

If I stay in Sitting Bull´s religion, Pacal declares on me (happened in second try)

...

And there is no way I can produce enough troops in time to survive... ...I think I just lost too many axes (4 I think) when capturing the two barb cities (lots of bad luck involved) and now my power is WAY too low and I´m too easy prey:mad:

...

But I´m happy to vote and to continue from anybody´s save at 1 AD if this game isn´t dead..

...

@ Giaur:

Do we continue & how do we continue & who reached 1 AD?

Hey, I reached 1A.D but I won't have access to my PC until tommorow evening. I'm ok diplomatically, everyone is hindu including me.
Things are not looking good though, I didn't manage to build GLib, and I got blocked pretty badly, so my cities are not so great.
What bothers me the most is lack of strong production city.
Imperialistic civs are such a pain in the ass on deity, Charlie expanded in my direction and was all over my place before I could found 4th city.

To start some discussion about the developments so far, here are some thoughts of mine:

@Giaur: Your 1 AD looks pretty nice! Restarting was a good idea.
Spoiler :

Techs: It seems you were the first to Philo! That was powerplay!
A little concern that I have is that you need quite some time to get the calendar resources hooked up. That means until then the happy cap of your cities is lower than it could be - thus reducing growth.
However, with Philo you could now switch tp Pacifism to pump out GS more quickly. Do you plan to get the NE as well (thus speeding up GS "production" even more)?

Land/cities: you managed to get a decent amount of space and well grown cities.

Religion: A little concern is your switching to Buddhism while Pacal is still Hindu. Hope you won't get the problem that Snaaty got. You don't fear being attacked by him?
On the other hand, it is probably much easier for you to trade with your Buddhist buddies.

@ungy
I continued my save on a bit. Not good. No DOW but I get boxed in every which way and quit in frustration.
Getting boxed in is really awful and in this game the AI civs were really quick. However, in every defeat you will learn something. Do you feel like starting again - as Giaur did? Perhaps this time with a bit more REXing?

@Snaaty: Too bad it didn't work out. That shows that you also need a bit of luck in deity...

@Betruger:
Spoiler :

It looks quite good. Especially, since everybody on your continent is of the same religion. You should be able to trade quite a bit... Too bad you couldn't make it to be the first to settle the Pisa-spot. That would have blocked quite a bit. However, you have a substantial number of cities. Charles expanded in your game much more aggressively than in my game. What is your tech situation? Could you post your save, when you are back?

@all: Even though some of us faced some problems and had to quit, I hope all of you are still motivated to continue. I think so far that game has taught us quite a bit. For example in my case, I did much more MM than before and I never REXed that much, almost drowning my economy.
After we have concluded the "early phase" - with land grabbing, first stage of developing cities, hooking up resources, getting some defense etc. - I would be rather interested to see how the next phase is going to be.

With respect to discussion and voting: So far it seems we have 3 games to discuss and vote on: the games of Giaur, Betruger and myself - I hope I haven't missed anyone. It would be great if others posted their 1 ADs, as well - if they have one and want to.

Actually, funny thing - I can't find my 1 AD save. Really. I've searched my entire HDD and nothing :( Not sure what happened there, I'm quite certain I made that save.

I in particular lost my saves due to some HDD problems, and then lost interest. Would love to start another one of these though :)

@US: I would be very happy if you tried this game and posted your 1AD save. It seems very difficult to even survive.
Perhaps we can revive this thread?

@ Unconquered Sun:

From my side of the game, because of a) Sitting Bull stomping me early or b) Pacal dong the same:crazyeye: ... ...and since nobody seemed to be interested in going on with one of the other saves I lost interest on this game

...

But I might be also interested in a new try, continuing this one I don´t really feel like...
