Wishing I Was Here
Hello Peeps!

I had a question: I'm playing america and I am currently a monarchy. I wanted to change to democracy cuz I always here how much revenue you are able to get from it. I switched, went into normal anarchy and then picked democracy. I WAS reaping 68 gpt before the switch, but then after I got Democracy, I only got 17 gpt. What's with that? I only stuck with that for a few turns and reverted to my pre-anarchy saved game because I was disgusted. Do you need to give it a certain amount of time for your cash to bounce back?

(BTW, I didn't realize it, but the year I picked to change to Democracy was 1776 AD! Weird, huh? I didn't even plan it! )

Thanks!

democracy has no military upkep,a nd so you pay 1 GPT for every unit you own, which can hurt you alot. however, you get lower corruption than any toher gov't, your workers work faster and peopel are happie. just watch out for WW.

Also, when you change to one of the more "productive" governments like Democracy, you need to take a look at your Lux and Science sliders. It may be that you can keep your people just as happy and research just as fast with them set lower. That'll give you more $$.

OUCH! I didn't know that! That makes sense why I went down the tubes gold wise so fast. I have a large amount of territory + the protection for each city + at least 2 garrisons two city = no money!!! D'oh!

Gosh, I don't know if I should go to democracy or stick with monarchy. My focus is culture, trade, science, and expansion, BTW. But I also wanna keep a good military ready cuz I'm playing vs. the aztecs AND the germans. You know how sweet their temperments are... :p What government do guys think would work the best?

Thanks!

You're leaving out Republic which is often a pretty good choice. Nearly as productive as Democracy, and WW is much more manageable. It can be a good choice if you expect to fight many wars.

Um, what does WW mean? I don't really know.

WW = War Weariness

Edit: Last Conformist beats me to it.

Thanks!

You are better off in democracy if you aren't planning on fighting. Just get rid of some units. You will get much more money in the long run than a monarchy, and your workers will work faster, and the ai wont be able to buy out your cities with propaganda, as if they ever do ;)

I almost always prefer republic over monarchy. They are available at pretty much the same time. The only exceptions for me are heavy war games (like a variant in which you are at war all the time with all opponents).

I also prefer republic over democracy. Democracy is slightly better, but you have to go through anarchy to get it. IMHO not worth it. Religious civs have only one turn of anarchy, so only with one of them I would switch from republic to democracy.

hehehe...its strange, im currently democracy, have 66 cities, and am at war with Rome and China, but Im still raking in loadsa money whilst keeping a high science output.

though the other civs are a few techs behind me! ??

but democracy is fine for me,,, better than republic

Superevie,

lower your science tax rate as someone else mentioned. This will most likely make it so you are researching faster AND making more gold than before, all the while having a lot more room for modification.

It's tough to say because I don't know what the map looks like and I don't know where you are tech-wise, but you probably could afford to reduce your military a little. In Monarchy and Despotism it's good to keep a usefull of units per city because it quells unhappyness, but in democracy there is often no point in having military units in interior cities. If you have RRed your empire and don't plan on going on the offensive, you can afford to reduce your army even further, as the infinant movement allows you to protect vulnerable locations with a relatively small, but technicaly advanced army.

If you're going to switch from Monarchy to Democracy you need to have some Banks in at least 2-3 cities, having built Wall Street would be even better and Smiths Trading company helps out also. If you have these built then the gpt shouldn't be much different from what you had before if not higher, and you can still keep the army you had before. I have only really done this strategy on Regent and Monarch levels, so it may not work on others.

I never use Democrcy because I build huge armies. Not to mention that I don't like the WW or the fact that you can't use MP to make your people happy which means I have to build more city improvements and/or rely upon other civs to make my people happy.
11 to go.

Couldn't have said it better myself, this is most likely your problem.
