Is there any reason to build anything in deserts, the only time it's good to bulid something in a desert is if there a flood planins in it. If I'm wrong tell me some other good things about deserts.
I also think watermills are buildable on desert tiles (next to rivers, of course). Not that they are that good, but they are better than the nothingness of the sand.
I've often seen oil percolating up through the desert sands.

like one guy said, as long as it's not completely barren on all sides for a ways, putting a city smack on a desert tile will give you i think 2 food and 1 hammer. If the surrounding tiles don't have a lot of desert, it's sometimes not a bad spot for a city if you can take advantage of other neighboring tiles...
Building a city on a desert square will give you the same base food, hammers and commerce per turn as building one on a grassland square. The only exception to 2-1-1 is when you build on a plains/hill and get an extra hammer per turn. This is true for all base terrain, but not terrain with a resource on it.
So if you have a desert square with flood plains and other nice terrain in the cross, it can be worthwhile to build a city on it. You just won't have fresh water unless it is adjacent to an oasis, or the immediate river trade connection.
