Design Thread - For Discussion and Review

Well, yes, George III did involve the Napoelonic Wars and the American War of Independence as well as the War of 1812 (even if his son was already regent by then IIRC). As for the Inventor - I was amused when I saw that for all the England-ish things that we have, from Mercia to the Anglo-Saxons to William the Conqueror to Henry VIII to Elizabeth I to Victoria to Churchill to even Elizabeth II, we didn't have anything that marked the Industrial Revolution era of Britain, as in the first one, with steam engines just being invented and macademised roads being a revolutionary invention - which I thought was quite bizarre.

Unfortunately, I got stuck in the problem that George III's possible military units - the Ship of the Line and the Redcoat - were taken by Victoria already, and I couldn't really find anything militaresque relating to that era.

Maybe a Gunboat? I heard the Royal Navy built a handful of them in the early 1800s after Steam Power became popular. Not exactly completely concordant with the Era you want to represent but I haven't really seen any other English civ use it.

Also isn't an Inventor something a bit too... broad? I know the British Isles have been home to some the most well-known innovators of the 20th Century almost every other country in the world can boast about having some sort of famous designer.

Well, yes, I was thinking more about inventions that were correlated to that. I did make some changes that right now I am satisfied with when it comes to design, incorporating parts of the design that frankly were missing.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland

Leader: George III

UA: Glory in the Name of Britain: Gain :c5goldenage: Golden Age points whenever a :c5citizen: Citizen is born or you kill an enemy unit while in Friendly City-State territory. During :c5goldenage: Golden Ages, :c5production: Building and Unit Production is increased by 50%.

UU: King's Legion: Rifleman replacement. During :c5goldenage: Golden Ages, gains +1 :c5moves: Movement. Has more :c5strength: Combat Strength while inside Friendly City-State territory.

UB: Spinning Mule: Mint replacement. Rather than granting +2 :c5gold: Gold on Gold and Silver, the Spinning Mule grants +1 :c5gold: Gold on Sheep, Cotton and Silk, doubled if the City is on a River, and it may be built everywhere. Also, the Spinning Mule increases :c5food: Food kept after a :c5citizen: Citizen is born by 1% for each Farm and Pasture worked, up to a maximum of 20%.

Greenjackets or Royal Scots Greys could have worked as military UUs, I presume the current King's Legion UU is based on the KGL?

I feel like some kind of early factory replacement would help to represent the Industrial Revolution, especially given that it would likely give access to an early ideology. That said, it's your design and I like it much better with the military unit replacing the Inventor.

The simplest (and perhaps more effective) change would be to change the Spinning Mule to a Windmill replacement rather than a Mint replacement and have it grant an Ideology after a few have been built.

Yeah, that sounds like a good solution - perhaps have 4 or 5 of them required for the Ideology rather than the default 3. I can see the UB being potentially too strong otherwise but I'm not the greatest when it comes to balance.

In general, I'm really liking how this design has turned out.

And here is the finalized design!

I'm quite pleased with how it ended up, actually.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland

Leader: George III

UA: Glory in the Name of Britain: Gain :c5goldenage: Golden Age points whenever a :c5citizen: Citizen is born or you kill an enemy unit while in allied City-State territory. During :c5goldenage: Golden Ages, :c5production: Building and Unit Production is increased by 50%.

UU: Greenjackets: Rifleman replacement. During :c5goldenage: Golden Ages, gains +1 :c5moves: Movement. Has more :c5strength: Combat Strength while inside Friendly City-State territory.

UB: Spinning Mule: Windmill replacement. Unlike the Windmill, the Spinning Mule can be built anywhere, and it grants +1 :c5gold: Gold on Sheep, Cotton and Silk, doubled if the City is on a River. In addition, the Spinning Mule increases :c5food: Food kept after a :c5citizen: Citizen is born by 1% for each Farm and Pasture worked, up to a maximum of 20%. 5 Spinning Mules can be used to unlock an Ideology.

Any thoughts on this Roman designs?

Kingdom of Roem

Leader: Romulus

UA: Raised by Wolves: Have a chance to gain a :c5citizen: Citizen in the :c5capital: Capital when clearing Barbarian Encampments or capturing cities. The :c5capital: Capital can build National Wonders without having the prerequisite in all cities.

UU: Celeres: Replaces Horseman, but is more expensive. Double :c5moves: Movement in hills and receives defensive terrain penalties. Upon killing a unit, the Celeres heals 15 HP and regains its :c5moves: Movement points.

UB: Cura Annonae: Replaces Granary. In the Capital, whenever a :c5citizen: Citizen is born gain :c5culture: Culture and 15% of :c5food: Food is carried over. In all other cities, worked sources of Wheat provide +1 :c5food: Food in the :c5capital: Capital. +1 :c5culture: Culture on Wheat regardless of location.

Initial thought? ROEM STRONK!

In all seriousness, I really like the design (I'm probably too much of a sucker for food-based civs :p) and it's nice to see embryonic Rome get some representation. The UA is especially nice, I like how it hints at Rome's early expansion with an incentive to go honour (gotta catch those pesky barbs yo). Numa Pompilius would be a pretty cool leader for a Kingdom of Rome civ as well, but Romulus certainly fits the more militarized version you've presented.

It's got me thinking, I'd really like to see an early Rome design centered around the web of alliances they established with the other local states to ensure dominance. Pre-Social War Rome basically, I don't know how it could be made unique from other City State focused civs however.

Edit; Didn't you have a Trajan civ planned as well? Studying Rome for the majority of my last semester really made me interested in seeing more alternate Roman civs - so I'd certainly be excited for either.

I'm just stepping in here I really love the idea of a growth based early rome and that british civ centered around early industrialization.

They both feel like incredible resounding concepts that somehow haven't been touched yet.

Made a UK civilization which isn't fully polished yet. Would appreciate feedback

United Kingdom (Edward VII)

UA: Royal Peacemaker ~ Gain 10% more influence for each Diplomatic mission done with a city-state and other civilizations with a friendship declared provide you +3 Gold :c5gold: and +2 Culture :c5culture: per turn. Alongside this whenever you make a peace treaty with another civilization, receive +80 Gold :c5gold: instantly

UU: Fleet: (Replaces Ironclad) ~ Gain +10 XP more than the normal Ironclad and has +1 more movement across deep ocean. :c5moves:

UB: House of Lords: (Replaces Castle) ~ On top of the normal castle effects, gain +3 Gold :c5gold: for every Great Merchant point being generated.

Ryukyu Kingdom

Leader: Sho Shin

UA: Great Days of Chuzan: Naval Units within 2 tiles of a friendly Cargo Ship gain +1 :c5moves: Movement and gain :c5goldenage: Golden Age points from winning battles. Land and Civilian Units in the same tile as Naval Units may Embark and grant a 20% Attack Bonus to the Naval Unit.

UB: Gusuku: Castle replacement. Available at Guilds. Does not need Walls in the City. +3 :c5gold: Gold. If built on a different landmass than that of the :c5capital: Capital, grants +2 :c5happy: Happiness. +2 :c5gold: Gold from Naval Trade Routes.

UU: Wokou: Privateer replacement. Pillages all enemy land tiles adjacent to the Coast, gaining :c5war: Experience and :c5gold: Gold for every tile pillaged. Starts with Coastal Raider II.

Japanese pirates? What is this, One Piece?

Its nice, but... You're probably doing something wrong if your trade routes are going through the middle of a battlefield, and while the design is nice, its a bit to militaristic for a trade- ish civ. Perhaps move some of the UAs bonuses over to the UU.

Made a little civilization that I think will need tweaking.

America (Abraham Lincoln)

UA: Agricultural Establishments - For every worker deployed gain +2 Food :c5food: to any city within 4 tiles of the work. Alongside this, gain an instant 2 new citizens :c5happiness: upon finishing a policy tree.

UU: Jessie Scout (Replaces Musketman) - Deals 10% more damage :c5strength: for every spy being stationed in another civilization. (Cap limit is 30%)

UB: Department of Agriculture (Replaces Hospital) - Yields +6 Food :c5food: and for every citizen born gain 10% of the food :c5food: cost in culture. :c5culture:

Anyone got negative feelings about this design?

Civilization: Yamato
Leader: Suiko

Seventeen Articles
Faith turns into Culture in cities that follow a foreign religion. Embassies in Yamato yield Faith and convert followers to their native religion.

Uji (Spearman)
Increases Happiness by two while garrisoned, and the Uji also upgrades to a Swordsman if the city adopts a Religion for the first time.

Kofun (Shrine)
Halts Faith generation after you found a Pantheon and begins to yield +2 Culture instead, while also becoming Maintenance free.

I think that the UU and UB are great, but... The UA might be unbalanced. Not that you can prevent it, its (almost) totally dependent on things out of the player's control.

I like that Yamato design, something about the way it seems entirely focused around encouraging you to adopt other's religions rather than founding your own - not many other civs seem to have the same objectives.

I dunno, It's a really nice design - can't think of anything negative about it.

Working on an America Split! This is my first design:

America (Franklin D. Roosevelt)
UA: National Spirit - For every 2 "Golden Ages" :c5goldenage: that is earned, you gain a free policy and +2 Gold :c5gold: per turn.
UU: Armed Horsemen - (Replaces Calvary) Unlike the Calvary can attack twice, but has a lowered strength of 23 :c5strength:.
UB: Supreme Court - (Replaces Courthouse) The occupied city in which this building is produced gain +3 :c5production: and yields +2 Happiness :c5happy:
