This topic is not about the armies themselves per se, rather what components would you use to assemble your fantasy war machine. First, no army is perfect for every situation, but this is what I like as a general purpose army applicable to a wide array of situations.

Blue = Medieval

Orange = Classical

Light Infantry: Balacrean Slingers, Thracian Peltasts, Agriannes javelinmen, Roman Spear Auxilia, Roman Auxiliary Slingers, and Cretan & Rhodian Mercenary Archers and Slingers

Heavy Cavalry: Companion cavalry, French Paladins, Ottoman sipahis, Elite Ghulams, Teutonic Knights, Russian Boyars, Byzantine Cataphracts (Kataphrakto) & Stratiotai, Ala Singulares, Heteroi & Thessalian cavalry

Light Cavalry: Numidian cavalry, Mongol Horse Archers, Polish strzelcy (mounted crossbowmen), turkopoles, and Spanish Hoblars, Mercenary Tarentine cavalry, Paeonian scouts

Archers: Chinese Professional Composite Bowmen, Cho Ku Nus, Han Crossbowmen with grid sights, English & Welsh Longbowmen, Scythian foot archers, and Geonese & North Italian Crossbowmen, Pavise Arbalesters

Artillery: Roman Ballistas, Chinese Trebuchets and p’ao-shou catapults

Heavy Infantry Guarding the Center: Scottish Pikemen, English Billmen, Swiss Halberdiers (Reislaufer), German landsknechts, and African (Libyan) & Macedonian Phalangites

Heavy Infantry Guarding the Flanks: Roman Legionaries (Trajan Era), English Men at Arms, and Spanish Sword-and-Buckler men (rodeleros)

Reserve/Special infantry A Select Band of Janissaries, a bodyguard made up of Samurai, and The Sacred Band and a select band of Spartan Hoplites

Field Commanders: Edward I Longshanks, Edward the Black Prince, & Richard the Lion-Heart (Left Flank), Epaminondas, Cyrus, Alexander, & Phillip (Center), Jalal-ad-Din, Alp Arlsan, & Sultan Beyazid II (Right Flank), Hannibal (Overall Field Command)

Strategic Commanders: Subotai & Genghis Khan, Scipio & Hannibal, Simon de Montfort, Edward IV, Belisarius, Heraclius Fabius ****ator

Political Aides:: Demosthenes, Hyperides of Athens, and Gaius Marius & Julius Caesar (excellent at politics and diplomacy, I could depend on these guys to fill in across the board so I’m covered from any pesky lawsuits)

Siege engineers: Imperial Cohorts (for engineering purposes), minghan engineers, Persian Engineers, Archimedes (for some uber-sophisticated machinery), Diognetus of Rhodes and Epimachus of Athens (Epimachus built the helepolis for Demetrius, and until the imperial era, the Rhodians, Chinese, and Persians were bar none the most innovative artillery engineers)

Whew! What an army

one problem- how woudl get all those comander to act in a concerted manner- they all had full command of thier own armies, and all thier armies, with a few exaception between soem particuler commander, were widelly different from eachother.

that and the fact that so many troops types might proove unweidlly to use, and to have significant numbers of any particuler type, the resources needed would be vast

Hehe, calm down Xen, I wasn't going into too much thought about logistics and such, cause it's fantasy. Afterall, there were some exceptional "units" produced by different civilizations. You're right about the different cultures/races. But that probably also depends on who you mix it with. See, if you mix Germans and French together.. . well, good luck. If you do the same with the English and French, well... good luck (then again, the French don't get along with anyone, oh sorry, I guess I just dissed the French again). Though presumbly you 'can' use certain 'ethnic' tensions to your advantage. For example, the Mongols used Russians for their conquest of Poland and Hungary, and well, there just wouldn't be too much problem in a case like that. All you have to do is to make them hate your enemies more. As for numbers and logistics, don't forget, in China, the typical size of an army was around 50 - 100K men (armored and armed to the teeth, too!). The Song dynasty (the era we are assocaited with, 13th century) had an army of 2-3 million men. So its not too big of a number to have around 50k men, even in the case of Europe. Admittingly, medieval European organization wasn't exactly what you would call 'groundbreaking', but it was not impossible, I think.
