Folks,

One of the big changes this DG brought was the concept of a Designated Player pool. The idea being that all citizens, if interested, could try to get into the pool, and were approved by the votes of the citizens.

We've had two terms of the DP pool. What do you all think about it? Likes, dislikes, possible changes, pet peeves - just about anything related to the DP pool.

Thanks!

I think this is the greatest idea to come to the demogame, now we have heavily contested presidential elections because we don't tie the president down to playing the game, this also allows for much more leadership from the President

There may have been a chat or two when the DP was unfamiliar with the traditions of the chat. It might be a good idea to request (not require of course) that any "new" DPs for a term attend at least one veteran-led chat prior to when they come up in the order. Also we could post the scripts that many of us use for end of turn reports along with a simple user's guide.

I think that all in all, the DP Pool program has been a success. The control freak in me is not too fond about the gameplay limits forced upon the President in deference to a group that may not be fully engaged in the game at all times. That said, the only change I would make is that the DP pool be used in support of the President's gameplay schedule instead of having the pool as its own entity.

Perhaps a reasonable compromise would be to allow the President to run up to 3 game sessions of his/her choosing. The DP pool could fill in for the remaining sessions.

If there is enough support for this type of change, then I will draft an amendment for it. Otherwise, this has been a reasonably successful program.

I second the script-releasing part, post them in the Designated Player pool thread.

I do enjoy this method that we have done so far, but I think that the President position is a bit weird - why not just eliminate it all together?

To all ones that have been DP this game: how long did your turnchat take, about? The max I can do is 2-3 hours before I would have to hand if off, so I would just like to get an idea.

GA, what exactly is so wierd about national objectives like maintaining the treasury, wonder builds and worker allocations?

My chat took just over an hour and was 5 turns long, but that was the first one of this term.

I did eleven turns in just over an hour. Faster than I expected.

I like the DP pool. It gave me a taste of what it's like to run our country.

DP Pool is a complete success!! It has allowed for more people to participate to a greater extent through DPing and has made room for highly contested Presidential races. DP Pool has really been one of the best upgrades from DG6 to DG7!

I agree, the DP pool has been a decorrupting and refreshing part of the demogame, and diluted what was before dictatorial powers to be replaced with more participation.

The idea of reserving a small number of play sessions for the President is a good one. My original concept of the DP pool idea was a number of designated backups for the President, not to have the pool take over the play duties entirely. Maybe the first and last chat of a term should always be reserved for the President.

I disagree, I wouldn't run for President if this were the case, and I have been contemplating running for a bit(but this term there are already 2 excellent candidates...)

Black_Hole, you will notice in my original offering, I stated that the President should be allowed to run up to 3 sessions of his choosing. I am delighted to get DaveShack's support on my proposal, but would like to keep such an amendment flexible enough for citizens like Black_Hole who haven't the time nor desire to run more than one, if any, game sessions.

I like it, it was fun to get ago at it. Although i did like the old system of president and a clear chain of command. but the pool is good

In my comment above about reserving the 1st and last sessions for the President, this would be an optional choice for the President, not mandatory. I would be equally happy with two sessions of the President's choice. In either case it should be an option that the President can use or not depending on his/her preference.
