Desktop Computer Advice

What are you talking about? There are loads of games that take advantage of multi-core processors. Basically (if not all) any game that was ported from the Xbox 360 can take full advantage of at least 3-cores. In fact, I don't know why CIV IV doesn't take advantage of multi-core systems when its engine (gamebryo) supports it...
 
The price of a Quad-Core does not justify the amount of games you can play though. For 750$ more you get to play a select amount of games at a higher FPS. Dual-Core is fine for now, and if you get a good motherboard, when Quad-Core becomes commonplace you will be able to easily upgrade.
 
You do realize that you can get a Quad-core for less than $300, right? Which is about equal to the high-end dual core. Although I wouldn't buy any CPU right now, as Intel/ Amd are just about to release new chips...
 
Yes, I do. there is no point though really, as its speeds are slower. And yes, best to wait until the new Penryns come out, as they will have cheap quad-cores that are also rather fast.v
 
Well for specs u can get 2GB RAM, Geforce 8800 GTS (at least 320mb), 22" LCD monitor, Windows Vista 64-bit, Intel Duo Core 2 3.0Ghz and at least 250 GB hard drive.:)

Why would you want Vista? get XP, cheaper, and its gonna be supported for a while still ( They even released a beta of SP 3 today )
 
How many games do you know that run DX 10 so far. i see what you're trying to say, but would it not be better to wait until the service pack?
 
Most of those games are also DX 9 compatible, no? I personally am not willing to put up with the BS of Vista ( I had to use it at work for a bit, and I hated every moment of it ) just to play some games. I would much rather stick with XP and a good video card, because that just makes my life easier. Yes there are some people out there who are fine with Vista, but Im not, and Im just voicing my own opinion here.
Most of those game sodnt even come out until the approximate stop of support for XP from MS. so why put up with Vista now. Wait until the service pack comes out ( Early 2008 or so I think ) and get it next summer. Then you will be future proof, as well as avoid some of the more annoyant things that are wrong with Vista now.
 
Sorry to butt in, i'm getting a new processor, and for no price difference (the price and spec of each fits the bill nicely) I could get either the:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6850
or the
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Which, considering i'll probably have it between two and three years, do you think i'd be better off getting?

EDIT: And what would be the advantages of each? Baring in mind i'm generally tech savvy.

What do you plan to do with it? I would recommend the E6850 just because its faster, even though it has less cores. Unless you do any processor heavy stuff ( video editing, media creation, etc ) then you should be fine with 2 cores for another year or so ( not sure about 2 or 3 years though, we're likely to break the mainstream quad-core barrier pretty soon )
 
Actually the Quad core is better. Right now however, the Dual core would do just fine, but if you choose the Quad, in a year or so you will be glad that you did, when more applications are able to take advantage of it. If you plan to upgrade soon anyway, your better off with the dual-core. (Actually you shouldn't buy either, Intel is going to release new processors that will use less power, give off less heat, and, hopefully, be cheaper)

I agree with Ghost Ranger on this one. Wait until the new Penryns come out. Then get one of the midrange quad-cores, since they will most likely be quite powerful and cheaper
 
Well they're out next year aren't they?
I could quite do with the upgrade now to play the games I want (ie Crysis) but I could always buy a new Penryn at the end of next year.
