I had thought taking their capital would do it; but apparently not, maybe I'm thinking of earlier versions because their progress is unchanged.

Can this be done by anything other the complete obilteration of the civilisation in question?

Complete destruction of them will do, but simply taking their capital is enough. I have two examples of that with BTS 3.19:

1-One in LHC João take 2. Also posted this one in the Newbie Questions thread.

2- Another in the Monarch Student^ III - Sitting Bull.

You can only destroy a spaceship (capital capture) when it has been launched.
Not when it's still in progress.

Ah, so really I should just cripple the hell out of those I am at war with now but not keep taking cities because their capital will end up in an obscure island.

Anybody not at war with I should park the mother of all amphibious attack fleets just outside terrirorial waters near their capital and wait for them to launch.

That sound about right?

Yes. Your other options are to use espionage to sabotage parts, or to vassal that AI early and then perpetually force it to research future tech instead of finishing off its space techs.

Ta.

In my particular circumstances in the game in question however neither applies:

a) Because I have welll and truly lost the Espionage Battle

b) I have forced Vassals tech down lines that will keep them away from wonders and spaceship components I don't want them to build before; however I'm not sure that'll work here because the tech lines are so advanced that they could trade for it anyway. So I think anyone I haven't already vassalised I can't afford to risk letting capitulate.

Basically I asked for a random Tectonics map and it gave me a Mediterranean one. I've never had one of these before and have discovered it means:
No happiness resources to speak of
No oil that I can see.
A whole load of land

Fortunatly I have Std Ethanol so I am the only person able to build cutting edge ground units where everyone else is stuck with Mech Inf, Marines, Artillery, SAM Infantry and Cavalry and whatever nuclear Naval units they can scrape up.

I am tearing them up but I have Guilgamesh and his vassal Tokugawa still to go through, have just DOWd Joao and already crippled Pacal - the fact that he still shows as winning the space race is what triggered my question.

So really I'm just going to leave Pacal for my vassals to finish off because I don't want more maintence than I already have and I have all the cities I want from him and a few more.
I'm currently working on FT2 with Culture at 60% and everything else at 0; and that is just to cope with War Wearniess and TWCYAV

How do you make vassals tech down a certain path? I have never been able to do that. Also I thought capitulated vassals had to give you techs but mine often say no.

In 3.19 vassals are always willing to TRADE techs, not give them to you.

You can make any kind of vassal research a specific tech by going into "let's discuss something else" -----> "we would like you to research".
