Destroying Forts?

Hello, I was wondering if there is a way to destroy a fort that is under my control. When I fight wars at the stage I am at I prefer to raze my enemies cities, partly because I can;'t afford to have any more cities of my own, and partly because they are generally in non-optimal locations. The AI likes to build forts, and I find them useful at locations to heal my units. However, the AI refuses to take back any forts I leave undefended, even if it's empty or only has 1 injured unit in it. This, combined with the culture flips from winning lots of battles has resulted in me having weird borders all over the place, that never seem to flip, even if the fort is the only nearby culture-producing I own. Nor do I have Open Borders with any neutral parties, and if I did, I wouldn't want them taking the forts. Just as I prefer to raze cities than keep them, I would also prefer to raze the forts that I take from my enemies, especially when they have no long-term strategic value. Is there a way to destroy forts that I control?

Hmm, seems like a rather labour-intensive work-around. I'll give it a try anyway. Thanks for the quick reply. While I'm here though I have another question. I have a few tiles of culture under my control from winning some pretty large battles, mostly from taking cities. These tiles are not being influenced by a fort or anything, they were simply tiles controlled by an enemy culture that flipped during battles. Do these fade away? I don't quite understand the borders mechanism, and while it really has no real negative effect, it looks messy :)

Are you playing with Realistic Culture Spread Option On?

I think you have an option on where Battles influence the cultural borders. Should see the amount of influence you get after you win a combat with the unit in the log screen.

turn on the "Pillage Friendly Improvements" option in the BUG options then any of your attacking units can remove the fort.

Thank you very much, I suppose there's probably a lot of stuff I can do through the BUG menu that I have yet to realize

Indeed, looking through the BUG menu found that option as part of the RevDCM options. Now that I've unchecked it I can assume that fighting battles will no longer affect cultural control of tiles.

Thank you all very much for all the quick and informative replies :D

It's strange that the AI doesn't take them back, whenever I leave a fort undefended during a war and the AI can reach it, it usually sends a quick cavalry unit there to capture the fort.
