[Development] Canonical City Location Suggestions

Berlin should be moved 1N. It's not along the Elbe.

Makes sense as for accuracy.

Regarding gameplay, those three coastal tiles within Berlin's BFC would be worthless compared to the land tiles it currently has unless a sea resource is placed there.

The current location is intentional, the naming isn't.

Now that makes sense. One could make a case for Berlin's location being moved but I will defend Cologne's. I know it'd be more accurate for it to be on the western side of the Rhine but "Marburg" (where it is right now) is better regarding gameplay as you're better protected from French attacks.

Also, for some reason whenever I manually rename the cities they eventually switch back to their old names.

In Germany and Italy the only cities having the name they meant to are Hamburg, Konigsberg, Naples, Rome, and Milan, while any city named "?" keeps that name. I noticed in the rest of Europe every canonical city has its intended name except for Paris (Sens), while Mecca has "Al-Qunfundah" or something like that.

Yeah, it seems I had overall different opinions on the German city layout than the author of the CNM base map. Cologne is a no brainer, anything else would only create unnecessary pressure on both Paris and Amsterdam that makes none of the involved civs happy. Berlin was a more debatable case, the real city location is probably around the border of the two tiles in question and what makes the current "Wittenberg" location look wrong is how much it is hugging the Elbe river. Nevertheless, that location is just so much better and I don't think it makes sense to trade three good tiles for 3 non-coastal water tiles and force a civ to use that capital when it's a 50/50 call. We have a similar situation with "Linz" for Vienna where the alternative just crowds Budapest for mostly no reason.

Regarding Mecca and "Al-Qunfudhah" I am still unsure what the best location is, but pushing Mecca inland to expose more desert does not seem to be a desirable outcome. Please don't worry about the current desert isolation of the tile, I will address that separately.

Are there not going to be repeated city names in adjacent tiles? I agree about Berlin and Vienna though.

BTW what is being prioritized for being fixed right now? To see what can I playtest and report any bug I see.

Just play whatever you are interested in and report any issues. I prefer a broad coverage of all the aspects of the game over everyone zeroing in on the same thing

(Keep in mind what is already known not to be finished of course, like city names.)

Understood. I thought we were focusing on one issue at a time.

I'm intending on going back on city names and placements once we've dealt with bigger bugs to fix.

Is there a map with 1.18 civs city names ? If there is, it's great but otherwise it's a big lack. Nonetheless new civs are currently founding cities with real names (except "?" ones), which means there must be such a map.
